Welcome back DODC! Hopefully over time, this will be THE place again for dirt oval information. The mod sprint discussion should get pretty interesting!! Lets try and keep this forum a positive place for people to get answers to their questions. So.......What will we talk about first? Tires? Bodies? Chassis? Power/Speed?

Whatever we discuss I just hope it's not "what is the best motor"! Lol

The issue I have with Mod Sprint is more an issue with the racer. Why is it that so many racers think "mod or open" somehow equates to having to bolt up the most amount of horsepower fathomable?

Because they can. They see how fast the fast guys are going and think its all motor and not that they are probably getting through the corner better and carrying the speed down the straightaway. Or they do know that and just think well I can make up for what I'm lacking. That's an issue I see with a lot of "new" people in mod classes.

And then trying to explain to folks that they may need to slow down to go fast is met with a blank "wtf are you talking about?" stare.

I understand and agree with what you are saying, but I think if racers saw the "fast guys" winning with reasonable power it would do a lot to curb that appetite for power. But when you look at set up sheets for team drivers and see 5.5's and 6.5 motors it kind of makes you think you need that kind of power. If success with less power was publicized a little it might go a long way towards changing that mindset.

I certainly agree with this post.

Would be nice to have something like a "Agree" and "Disagree" button for individual posts within a thread.

Agree 100%

Biggest issue with stepping up to mod from a slower class is thinking they will be fast right off the bat. Some might be, but most will struggle for a bit. I know, from personal experience, I was a bag of rocks for about a year until I got the handle of it.

A helpful thing on the setup sheet might be radio adjustment.. Ok your running a 4.5, 5.5 6.5 whatever. But knowing the endpoint is down at 90% or 85% makes a huge difference too.
Just a thought YMMV.

I have been playing with mod more this last year because I don't want to play the blinky game anymore, and I am learning more about my radio than ever. I'm starting to come out of the fog and see that at least on the tracks I run, a mod car isn't that much faster than a blinky car lap time wise, so we probably don't need gobs more horsepower. Consistency will lead to good lap times and good runs, and for me that means not overpowering the track. So the radio comment is right on target for me! I'm curious as to what I can do that will work, without re-inventing the wheel. I know I can limit the top end as mentioned, certainly motor and boost are factors, I have tried expo curves in the past and not real fond of those when it comes to throttle. I have never played with speed or dual rate or arc for throttle, but I will. Fun stuff.

The more you can learn about your Speedo settings and radio the better you will be. the big issue is that unless you have a very good friend willing to teach you, it's trial and error.
But it goes back to practice and try things for yourself.

good luck and good racing

I'll second that! Still learning and having fun here. Thanks Wolfie!

The top guys at my local track aren’t usually turning the fastest lap times but almost every lap time is almost the same. I am fairly new to diet oval and racing rc all together and I am trying to be as consistent as them. I admit I do turn it up and try to blast out some fast lap times however it’s on a practice day. I agree with you guys that momentum and consistency will yield better results.
