Matt, I was reading your description of the Racers Haven track on their thread and I noticed that they use an agricultural sealer. Does that mean the track surface will be very much like what we raced on at CVR? I seem to remember reading somewhere that the tire of choice there is also Street Tracs. Does that mean the same blazing speeds and tire management requirements as CVR? Just thinking about my tire order.

Thanks, Frank

The track surface will be similar to the one at CVR, but due to the difference in the base dirt the track surface is usually a little smoother (less abrasive). At Racers Haven the tire of choice is usually foam tires, and the compounds of choice are usually Silver or Pink. Pink tires seem to last longer than Silvers, but the Silvers seem to have a little more grip. We normally race 17.5 motors in our electric cars, so we don't have a lot of experience using the extra power of the 10.5/13.5 motors so with the extra power street-tracs may work as well but I would plan on using foams. Also with the foam tires, tire wear is not as much of a problem as foams don't seem to wear as heavily. I think that one set of tires, two at most should easily get a car through the race weekend.

Kevin, thank you very much for the quick and very helpful reply. I'll be ready with foams for both cars.

would you look at that! 10.5 LM is quite the class now! So happy to see people into it, I think that is one of the best racing classes, so much fun! I've said it a million times, but thanks again Matt!

Matt Murphy

Electric Late Model is THE class at Racers Haven.....but our guys are fast with sprint cars too!

Foam tires WILL be the tire of choice. Most racers ran Silvers last year, with a slightly higher wear factor than pinks.... I will be on Custom Works V2's and V3's..... but the track WILL be hooked up. Hopefully you guys take my word.... after CVR!!!

BRC is a bigger track, but I expect Racers Haven to be the fastest track of the series, I know I have about 60 hours of work to put in before the race to ensure an awesome track!!!!

Go team Haven!!!

Matt

Matt Murphy
April 27th, 2010, 11:08 PM
Racers Haven will have a complete stock of Custom Works parts and CW Silver, Pink, V2, and V3 tires in stock. Basically at race tracks that have shops, my parts stash will be in the hobby shop!

Everyone is right on about the track at Haven, Very fast. When the track is sealed Silvers are the best that I have tried. Pinks last longer but since its a race and not an enduro I would stick to silvers. The V2 and V3 I haven't tried though. This is for both Sprint and Late Model. We normally run 17.5 but I might throw a 13.5 in just for kicks but don't think you will need anything more than that for sure. Looking forward to the race and if anyone else has quesions feel free to ask and everyone from haven will do our best to help.

with the tire talk buzz, it got me wondering, what kind of grooving pattern works well? most of my tires now are grooved for K&C, 5-7 vertical in the front 4-5 vertical in the rear with cross cuts, 1/16" deep max

dmayhew26
April 28th, 2010, 12:47 AM
I wouldn't even groove the tires if the track has traction like it has in the past. If your tires are only grooved 1/16th deep, just practice a few sessions and they will be fixed! lol. Tires wear pretty quick when the track is like it will be.

Matt Murphy
April 28th, 2010, 1:09 AM
David is spot on with his info, but the best thing about foams vs. rubber, you can wear the tire badly, and then re-true the set of tires, adjust ride height, get the rollout figured out again, and go racing!

I have been thinking about a rookie slash class..... question is, how to work out the points..... everyone has run as a single class for 2 races so far. Then comes the trouble of who qualifies as a rookie.... but I am thinkin about doing this.....

Matt

BJake

Matt,

A rookie clash would be great. I think it would be great for the kids as well as the adults who have to run with them now. I can speak for my two girls (Amanda and Kelly) when I say they would love a rookie class. I will agree for Kelly and Amanda and I'm sure we can work something out with Leo Craft (Leah and Erin), Jason Seaton (christopher) and Jason Thrun (Zac).

What you may not know is that all the kids involved so far (to my knowledge) have already run a series race at Speedworld last year. They are familiar with the concept and run together regularly in a kids class at Speedworld. Also their parents know each other and are all pretty reasonable (Except Jason who doesn't want to pit with the rest of us now that he is the points leader :)).

I think you could take the results from the first two races and just plug them into the points standings.

As far as the points, I have an idea. From Madera the kids I remember were
Leah Craft
Amanda Jacobsen
Christopher Seaton
Kelly Jacobsen

In the rescue race the standings were:
Leah
Zac
Kelly
Amanda
Erin

I think the kids (and adults) would appreciate separating the classes and you would get better racing (speaking only on behalf of my kids). I know it might add another heat to the program, but I think the extra time would be worth it to get better racing.

Just my .02 cents.

Attention Guys, Racers Haven has a few rules I need everyone to understand and adhere to. Racers Haven is a family friendly faciliity. Alcoholic beverages are not to be consumed during Racing and practice hours. Once the track is closed for the night Friday, and after racing Saturday, Alcoholic Beverage Consumption will be allowed. I have gotten the approval of Frank Amestoy, the track owner, but we will remove anyone from the premises not adhering to this policy. Racers Haven has strict rules on Alcohol and Illegal Drug use, and I lobbyed for a weekend pass, and this is the compromise we came up with. Please understand and do not get yourself kicked out or wear out the series welcome at this track. It is in the back of a shopping center, much different than the other RURAL tracks we are racing at.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding, Cant wait to race with you all once again!

It appears Racers Haven must have lights and with over 100 entries already and two new classes (Unlimited & Rookie slash) I suspect we'll be racing pretty late into the evening on saturday. I've been looking for a place to stay friday and saturday night and it seems most of the usual suspects are closer to downtown and quite a distance from the track. It looks like the track is fairly close to the airport and I found a Holiday Inn Express not far from the airport. Can you Racers Haven regulars tell me if that is a good choice or would you recommend something better? It's a bit on the pricey side but may be the only close choice. The Days Inn and Quality Inn were both quite a bit cheaper but seem to be a lot further form the track. Anyway, appreciate your recommendations.

Places to stay for the Bakersfield race:

Super 8
Whenever I stay at a hotel for races at Racers Haven, I stay at the Super 8. It is usually around $70-80 a night, but decent, clean, and 2-3 miles from the track.

Super 8 Bakersfield South
3620 Wible Road
Bakersfield, CA 93309
(661)833-1000

Motel 6
You can also stay at Motel 6, across the Freeway from the Super 8. This is the cheapest option, but isnt that great, usually $40-50 a night. This is not however the worst option.

Motel 6 Bakersfield South
2727 White Lane
Bakersfield, CA 93309
(661) 834-2828

Holiday Inn Express
For a nice place to stay near the Track, the Holiday Inn Express is your best bet.
Starting at $82 a night and 3-4 miles from the track.

Holiday Inn Express South Bakersfield
4400 Hughes Lane
Bakersfield, CA 93304
(661)833-3000

DO NOT STAY AT HOWARD JOHNSON ON WHITE LANE!!!! WORST HOTEL EVER.

The unlimited class will add a maximum of 30 minutes to the program..... and the Rookie short course class will not add any time..... Instead of 4 heats in one class of Short course trucks, there will now be 2 heats of short course trucks, and 2 heats of rookie short course trucks.....

Haven will likely be the highest entry count for the series though, and we have great lighting, and will most likely finish under the lights..... We have no curfew at Racers Haven!
