View Full Version : My thoughts on CVR Race #1

Matt Murphy
April 18th, 2010, 9:13 PM
CVR Race #1 is now in the bag. We had 106 total entries. Far greater than I ever imagined I would get when I first decided to start a California Racing Series.

I would like to apologize to everyone who feels that the race director did them wrong. I will take full responsibility for that situation. Although I did not hire him, He was "the best" race director available for CVR to hire. Again I am sorry for things that took place. This was my first series race as a promoter, and there are many things I will try to improve on. That race director will not be running another BEST of the WEST series race ever again. Using profanity and yelling at racers due to his own inability to line up the grids was something that embarrassed me as a promoter, and a racer alike. This series is meant to be a fun, family friendly environment, and I hope to ensure that atmosphere at the rest of the races. It was great to see families show up to race together, and most of all, it felt great to witness the foundation of the California Dirt Oval Racing family.

Thanks to everyone that came out and supported the series!

Please give me all your feedback, positive or negative, so I can make this Series more enjoyable for all.

I learned one thing for sure..... racing and promoting do NOT go together..... I will spend less time racing for the remainder of the series, and more time ensuring everything goes well.

The after practice, and after racing pit parties were awesome. Hanging out with my racing buddies and just relaxing was great! I had as much fun seeing all my friends again, and making new ones, than I did racing on the very high bite track CVR provided us with.

Thank you CVR, Namely Brandon Emmett, Ruben Gonzales, and Ray White for all your har work, and giving the BEST of the WEST Series a great first race, and the foundation for a great Dirt Oval racing community in the years to come.

Thank you all once again, It is you all, the racers that have made this series as great as it is. I have never seen so much close competition in the state of California, and I have been racing Dirt Oval since 1997. The old-timers.... LOL.... could tell us better, but I think Dirt Oval racing is on its way back to the popularity it enjoyed during the Dirt Oval heydays of the early 90's.

See you in two weeks!

One of the highlights to my weekend was watching a couple of young girls "FISHING" over the fence into the junkyard... And then they walked around with their big catch all day long! An old hubcap!

I walked out to the truck way out in the back of the parking lot... saw the ggirls, and wondered what the heck they were doing over there, so I snuck over towards them and caught a peek of their fishing endeavours.... LOL.

Classic!

I was one of the last to leave the parking lot this morning and lying right next to my truck was that stinky fish hubcap, I had to laugh.

Thanks to Matt, Brandon, and all that hard work everybody put into the race to make it a huge success.

Big thanks to Mike and Rex for the 5th wheel hospitality, good eats and a hot shower. Lots of Beer and BS going on till the wee hours and the midnight flashlight racing was a kick. I had a ton of fun not much luck but a ton of fun. Rescue in 2 weeks .

Matt,

You did a great job with the whole event, I was most impressed with the time management, I've been to races with 30 entries that take from 8 am to 6 pm to run, you made it happen with 106 entries and it went from 12-8, hats off bro you guys did a fab job . On the race director note, good call on him never returning, there were quite a few guys that got hosed because he couldn 't handle the task, but I think for the most part even those who were hosed did a great job of keeping good composure and keeping it professional. I feel that is due to the fact that they respect you as a racer and promoter and know that you would handle it as you did. I can tell you one thing, I am no pro racer by any means so running B-main in 1/8th late model was like making the final four in march madness for me. This was a huge show and there were some great races. I have been around stock car racing my whole life and watching you guys in the 1/8 latemodel A-main was like watching the A-main event at the end of a long Southwest tour race weekend, you knew it was the fastest guys of the weekend and it was quite impressive!!!! Can't wait for the next race in the series!!!!

a big thanks to matt and the cvr crew for the great job ! you showed that dirt oval in california can and will happen again , i just started dirt oval racing in january of this year and cvr was only the second track i have raced on , i feel i did quite well considering the talent of drivers that were there , i qualified second in the b main for 1/8 late model , and it sucked to have to restart 4 or 5 times or more i dont quite remember how many restarts we had and i was getting upset and the last time i got that upset i was racing off road and quit racing that day to go to dirt oval racing, and the race director should have done a better job plain and simple , also for the a main 1/10 gas sprint cars having to restart as many times as they did really sucked , i dont think he relized how hard it is to refuel one of those cars , and his language was something else , in all my years of racing little toy cars i have never seen or heard of or been apart of a race director that was that bad ! he was terrible in my opinion plain and simple , on another note with that many cars there needs to be a better way for us to line up better , i say this because he kept saying line up behind a certain color car , well if theres 4 cars that are black and 2 yellow and 2 white it makes it quite confusing , plus i am color blind and its real hard for me , maybe you could issue numbers before each main to help in this matter or have everyone line up on the back stretch to get the order correct before the parade lap, thats what they used to do in off road and i think they still do it now , i dont know just a thought , all in all i had a great time and look forward to the next race , thanks again matt and i will pm you for the rear diff case you owe me ....

all in all a good time and a good event thanks matt for making it happen, and thanks to CVR as well. had a pretty good time overall, there was some things about driver courtesy and clean driving that were severly lacking and i hope it cleans up a bit... #1 look ahead of your car you see a wreck slowdown go around... #2 if you are in a wreck dont shoot out in front of the guy coming wide to avoid you! the person trying to slow down and avoid the wreck cant stop from someone t-boneing them as they go by :( o well just not my day i look forward to good clean (haha on the dirt) fun in rescue. grats to all the good racers making it to the podium.:checkeredflag:

Billy Bowerman, Tim Copp, and Myself all are experienced race directors..... but we all are racing. I do however plan to step back my racing to focus more on keeping everything in line.

Rescue has their own race director, as does Racers Haven, Kit and Caboodle, and BRC.

Tim and myself are going to make ourselves available at the remaining races to take the mic and spice things up.... Im sure Billy would love to call a few races also.

We will certainly work on the issues at hand, and have a resolution at the next race. I have already figured out how to fix the starting problems for the nitro cars.

Thanks for your support guys, and keep the feedback coming.

First and most important, this was the most fun I have had racing my toy cars in years. Matt and everyone else involved, thank you for sacrificing the many unpaid man hours necessary to provide everyone with the best possible track to run a race of this size on (more commentary on this later...). Without your hard work, none of this would have been possible. Don't give up on the racing and directing Matt, it will get easier as you get more used to it.

Regarding the racers and the racing, I think it showed that we have a great group of Dirt Oval racers here in California. The event remided me of the great NORRCA series races we used to have back in the early 90's.

As for the race director, it is difficult for me to be overly harsh as I have taken my share of criticism as a race director in the past. I wish it would have been a little more professional and could have done without some of the personal opinion commentary, but all in all I have seen much worse. That being said, I did hear some things over the P.A. during the mains that should have embarrased anyone running a race program. In the future, we need to be sure our race director shares our passion about Dirt Oval racing to ensure that he is enjoying running our race and is not just there for the paycheck.

Finally, I want to address some of the comments about the track surface. Having raced dirt oval for over 20 years and attending many "major" events in my years I can assure you that providing a surface that is hard packed, sealed and high traction is the only way to insure consistency and fairness for all racers. It also keeps the program on time without unnecessary delays for track maintenance. While many of you may race at a local track that is in your words "real dirt", such tracks just do not hold up well to a large group of racers. Without the sealed surface, there would have been at minimum 2-4 hours added to the race day for basic track watering and maintenance...even more time if the track required more than basic watering. Each type of track has its own unique qualities, and its own shortcomings. I can't speak for the tracks up north, but for Madera and Bakersfield you cannot run a wet track race in the daytime - period. The track is dry 2 minutes after you are done watering it, and stopping to water after every race is not an option. For club racing, I will gladly "get dirty" with the rest of you...but for a large event such as these series races I would prefer not worrying about whether or not my heat race is going to get water or if the corner gets rutted up by the larger and heavier cars. Heck, even large offroad races run the tracks dry and spray the corners with root beer...or even worse, they run 1/8th scale IFMAR races on tracks with paved jumps and corners!!! Our track in Bakersfield will have a similar sealer applied for our race, and I promise that you will all have fun when you come down for it. Personally, I have (and will again if necessary) raced my dirt oval cars in a parking lot on real asphalt. After all it is the cars and the racers that matter, not the surface we are racing on.

Let's focus on the positives, and keep the momentum going. I wish I could make the trip to Rescue for race #2, but prior family commitments will keep me from making the trip. If all holds out, it will be the only race I will miss. Hope to see everyone in Bakersfield next month...

Kevin - Thanks for your support, and for further explaining the reasoning behind the track surface. I will not stop racing, as I love being on the stand with all of my friends, but feel that dedicating myself to providing great races for the California racers will benifit all of us in the coming years. Once again, I am very proud to be a part of the racing that went on yesterday.

I believe we had as much talent at our first series race from our 106 racers, as there was at the 2010 Chili Bowl with 200 plus racers. California has it going on!!!

I have never in my life seen a dirt track surface like that and I gotta say that was the most bitchin track I have ever run on, off road or oval. Ya it was a bit tuff on the 1/10 tires, but I ran the same set of 1/8 lm tires all weekend, except the one I tore off on the back wall LOL. I used to race full size stock cars and the tire wear on the 1/8lm reminded me of running the good soft ec84 goodyears on Mesa Marin, you'd have to scrape the rubber off the bottom of the body LOL> The track was super smooth and super fast, I think it made for some great racing. If BRC gets this surface ya'll better bring a parachute to attach to the back of your 1/8lm to slow em down at the other end LOL, cuz their gonna be breakin the sound barrier there.

Matt I am not running the LM class at the rest of the races as I would rather have my own car to crash LOL (thanks Roland for the rent a ride) I like Sprint cars and will only be racing that at the up comming Races so I will and would like to Help out as mutch as I can and let you Race more as I feel we need YOU out there banging wheel with us,This is your Idea and You should be racing. I would like to call some of the Mains as I will be at all the Races except Bakerfield as I will be helping Run the program at the Reedy Race.
As for isuse with last weekend I know how hard its gets when there are isuse with the scoring program. I am Glad I was able to find the isuse with the scoring loop for the b main I was wanting to help him getting it going But I also had to Pit For Brian so I could not help.

For up comming Race I feel we should do A slient check in for all the Nitro mains.
that way we know whos there and who not. I seen to many races where a driver is ready and on time but has to wait 5 mins for someone else with a slient check in after all cars have check we can start the 2min clock, plus with slient check in if we go in order each driver will see who is infront of him and that will help with lining them up.

I just started racing R/C SCT in July of last year mostly at Speedworld. I have raced a little at Kit and Coboodles with the SCT. Two weeks ago I bought on older Enforcer, new motor and speed control, friday afternoon practice was the first time I ever drove that Sprint Car. Broke a spur gear (thank you Matt for bringing an extra one)but got alot of laps in. With the help of Bill Bowerman and Steve Watson (thanks guys) getting my car dailed I was really having alot of fun out there. Then staurday morning qualifying time to make a long story short I got 6 laps in total, if anything could go wrong it went wrong. I did get a complete race in the "D" main and it made my day. So in closing I would like to say as ROOKIE "Matt, CVR and anyone else involved in putting this together" GREAT JOB !!!! you made it so fun for me that it has got me looking forward to the rest of this series and many more years to come in this great hobby.

Thanks again

The fun and good times far outstripped the few hiccups. The track surface was certainly wicked fast and I understand the problems mother nature created but personally I prefer dirt. Five or six sets of tires for two 1/10 scales is pretty hard on the pocket book. Looking forward to seeing and racing with you all at Rescue in a couple of weeks. Thanks Matt for a great job.

It was great meeting new faces and running some great laps!

Mel, you did really well for your fist time in a sprinter. Is that the car that was on the wall at K&C?

the 10.5 LM racing was some of the most fun I've ever had running toy cars in my life! Racing with Dave and Kevin was just awesome, I think I might have had something for them but I got rattled a little bit when Ron put me on my lid in the first minute! It was okay though I busted his balls pretty constantly about it on the four hour ride home and at dinner at split pea andersens :ha: I can't wait to run again at Bako with those guys, I have a feeling like that is going to be an awesome class down there!

Matt, awesome job out of the gate! I would say for an event of that size the teething problems were minimal, or at least you made it appear that way!

Nor Cal Hobbies, I don't remember your name, but you were pitted with Roland, and helping out with directing duties a bit, I totally forgot to bring you that extra dollar over that I owed you, I've been beating myself up over forgetting about it since last night. Thanks to Rolland Mathers for all the help on pit lane..He was running three classes doing turn marshall duties for allthree and still was able to find time to be there in the pits for us...Thanks buddy I appreciate it..:) Thanks to jason Smith for the loan of the springs..( i will have them back to you at rescue) And a big thanks to Pete lisles for the tires and Doogie for the help with the engines....:)

It was really great to see Tommy Thompson out after the garage disaster...HIs equipment was scorched and alittel worse for wear but he still managed to be competitive and make the show...Tommy is a racer for sure..

Thanks to the CVR crew and to MAtt for all the hard work to make race # 1 a great sucess..:) The racing was hotly contested and the Funny stories and the socializing around the bbq after the racing was over was alot of fun..:) See everyone at Rescue Rex

I started racing RC in 1980 I quit in 2002 and started back racing last Nov. In Saying that I raced with Tim Copp all his life and thats a great pleasure to race with him. Gary Keyes I raced with at NORCAL when both of us were much younger in the 80's Billy Bowerman I raced with for years too. I had so much fun last race, all of you guy's are cool with me and I look forward to racing with you guy's soon. I raced at many race's
before we had computers and cars were hand counted on paper. You guy's that complaing about small problems just don't know what really can happen when you run a big race and how hard it is to do. As race director of ROAR regional once and many other race my hats off to anyone who takes on that task. Stuff is going to happen with 106 entries.
I raced DLM and the tire wear was awsome I can race the same tires next race. I had fun the progrqm flowed but the Race Director was fustrated because CVR has had a glitch in their system and that was the real problem plus the pressure of the race in general. I want to thank Brandon, Rubein, Ray, Matt, Robert very good job and I will see you in Bakersfield.
I watched the vid of DLM race It looked fast I saw 2-3 wrecks the race and the cars were flying If that wasn't fun I don' know what fun is. I blew up at halfway but it was worth it just to race with you guy's!

WOW,

I don't know when i had that much fun before. When we showed up Friday and looked at the track my first thought was i hope i have enough tires because i had 3 sets for the 1/8 LM and plenty for the sprint. still have 2 set for the LM 1 new and 1 scuffed set. Used 1 set of tires for the LM. I think i would have 2 new sets for the LM if i could glue them my self because they are only glued around the outside edge of the tire and that is the only problem with the DLM2 tire.

The track was off the hook and some of the most clean driving i have ever been a part of and when there was carnage i did not hear anyone go off on the drivers stand good job everyone.

As far as the race director i guess i missed the foul language but i knew there would be some kind of a problem when he started out telling us how experienced he was and that they pay him to do this. I would not want the job.

i would like to thank Matt and the CVR crew for the track (WOW) no words other than don't let it go keep it in shape and i will be back.

Pete

Man you guys don't even know how good it fills to hear good feed back! I would love to get you guys back down one more time before the years up! Iv been throwing the idea around about having a non wing show and for all 1/10 cars on foams! And the track will be tons better when this damn rains over with! So thank you guys again for supporting cvr can't wait to see you all again soon! Brandon

Well after being a track owner and hobbyshop owner and being involved in the rc industry for over 35 years. It is one of the most thankless jobs you can have being a race director, almost being matched being the tech man, which by the way good job to matts dad for doing the thankless job. A race director can make or break a race program. I must commend the CVR crew for getting the track ready for racing I know what they have gone through. The race director should have not used foul language which could be heard by all on the PA, but in his defense I put part of the blame on CVR knowing they were having computer, software, loop problems, before the race weekend even came around. Hopefully CVR will learn from this valuble experience and fix the problems. I also know during the heat of battle sometimes we don't think strait. I watched the mains and was in one where delays were caused but drivers not linning up and cars dying. The rolling start is so cool. We just need to set a clock were once the last car checks two min clock starts and when the two minute ends tone goes off no exceptions. I did have fun at the race and it was good to see some old faces and to see some close battles. The 1/8 Amain was awsome 15 mins was not long enough, I was entertained through the whole thing put me on the edge of my seat and was cheering the racing on.
