View Full Version : 1/10 Scale Tire Choices

I wanted to start this thread to help racers make the sometimes difficult transition from foam tire high bite racing to loose dirt tires and vice-versa. I need to get some tire advice for CVR and Rescue and can share my choices for foam tire sprints at BRC. Last time I was at Rescue a couple years ago, I ran Proline Bowtie M3's with the white insert that came with it. and was not impressed with the traction or tirewear. Do Custom Works Street Tracks really work at CVR?
At BRC I have the most success with RC4Less Silvers and Pinks. I like to have a set of pinks and silvers because I often go to the stiffer pink on the right side. My Nitro sprint does better on taller tires in the 2.7 - 2.8 inch diameter range. I think this helps with the occasional track bump that shows up every now and then. I groove the front tires with 4 - 5 evenly spaced rings and the rears get 5 rings and crosscuts spaced about 1/4inch, along the edge of the tire I angle the cross cuts. Between races I clean with hand cleaner or simple green and apply Custom Works IT or RC4Less Stickit.
If any one needs foam tire help or you don't want to buy a tire truer just to race at BRC and Racer's Haven a couple times, post up and let us know. Im happy to help you out at the track or on the web.

Good one Rolland. I really hope CVR can get enough moisture in the track to keep the dust down so we can use Street trax on our sprinters and strykers on our CDM's. I know this would really help me keep cost down for that race because I all ready own many sets of each.... Brandon Start watering Now... LoL

Believe it or not we run are track dry, we have a hard pan clay mix. What I do is work the surface and soak the heck out of it and run my kart on it, then I let it sit for a week or so that makes the surface setup like concrete and the day before I put about a 100 or so hard laps on it so the track groves up. Then I blow it off with a blower and spray it down with sugar water and by the second round of quals the run line is black and the track is flat out hooked up! The weather has been killing me tho we just recently got tarps to cover the track so weather will no longer bother cvr. Last time the track blue groved my nitro sprint was doing wheel stands down the back straight on street tracs!

My suggestion is to run street tracks tires and set the cars up like you running foam tires! I ran my nor cal setup at cvr and it worked great. But be prepaired and bring buggy tires just in case! Rolland if your guys have any questions just give them your setup for nor cal that should put them real close! Brandon

I run my Outlaw with a 5.5 motor on Proline Bowties with stock foam in the rear and Proline ribs with stock foam in the front. The wear is pretty good so don't think you will need more than 2 sets. Have never had good luck s\with Street Tracks there.

Street Tracs for 10th scale at CVR..... 90% Sure this will be the tire of choice.... unless mother nature decides to change our tire plans!
I am planning on Holeshots and bowties at Rescue with ribbed fronts.
I am expecting to run RC4LESS SILVERS at the other three tracks....

Looks like I have some gluing ahead. Too bad 10th scaler's don't have a premounted tire like the DLM2!

Maybe we can go to a spec tire for the Nitro sprint class to keep the cost down... Everyone said street tracks on their tire choices for their track.

Its a good thought but I don't think it will work at all tracks,I think it would be tuff to run street tracs at rescue and haven. Plus I tried promoting a spec tire rule on 10 scale cars and all it dose is piss guys off! Lol. That's like me telling you, you have to run a 10 min main! Lol

Jeese Phil, this post is for tenth scale tires! I think I gave you those tires with the OFNA Car. They are Ofna tires that came with some strips of foam your supposed to use inside the tire. I mounted a set and all the foam settled at one spot in the tire and resulted in a big lump in my tire. I guess you'll have to find some foams donuts that will fit or can be made to fit.

Yeah you can make those work, it just depends on the track condition. It's going to be a lot drier in July!

The catch all tire for Rescue is the Bow tie, especially if the fines come out of the surface. When the groove is good, small pins like Holeshots or Switch2 work better. I believe Jud ran Losi Sprints. If it gets really good, we might end up on bald rears. I don't think even Jason could make Street Tracks work at Rescue.
BTW, Rescue tends to rut pretty good, and the TC3 length shocks don't do well.
For EDM Pete, Sherm or Tommy get around pretty good. They would be better to ask.
That's the view from the back of the B main.

I think we are going to work on the track this weekend and i will talk to Bruce about doing something like we did for the DODC race in 2005. Jason Smith should be able to help he does hold the track record. I haven't run a 10th scale sprint in 4 years.

Hey guys
What is the Difference in the Cw Street Trac Hb and the regular ones Another words Which one is softer? And what Foams would you run in each at CVR
RollandMathers
March 12th, 2010, 1:46 AM
I would call the HIgh Bites a softer tire. They balloon like crazy without gorilla tape.

Madera - Standard (not HB) Street Tracs will be good and I am running CW white rear inserts in all 4 tires.

We added alot of sugar however it was hard on tires. I was out there today testing the DLMII they are going to work fine.
Talked to Bruce and we are not going to sugar it because this time of year the track will hold water and tire wear should not be an issue and traction should be great Bowties or hole shots will be a good tire. i know what Roland is talking about and agree but after we started running the 1/8 scale LM the track grooves up with alot wider groove and tire wear has not been as bad because your not spinning the tires as much.
Cant wait to get down to CVR should be very much like Rescue. I always looked at it like this. If your tires are wearing your leaving rubber in the track and only gets faster.

Has anyone else notice the difference in tread depth on the new street tracks compared to the old ones? You get like half less.
Matt Murphy
March 26th, 2010, 6:15 PM
Custom Works customers complained that the street tracs took so long to "break-in", and due to the majority of their customers asking for an alternative, the mold was changed to make a tire race ready without a break0in period.
And of course, now that they made the change, some people are complaining that the tires do not last as long..... Although, the "good" life of the tire is the same, and now you do not need to break in tires for several weeks.
I ran the old tires and new tires at Chili Bowl this year..... I went 5 laps faster on the new tires..... over .3 seconds a lap faster.

At CVR what is tire choice for 1/10 spec sc trucks?
Matt Murphy
April 9th, 2010, 3:16 PM
Slash trucks must run stock slash tires. Strikes must run stock strike tires. Blitz's must use stock blitz tires. SC10's must run stock sc10 tires. No changing of tires brand to brand. No aftermarket tires. STOCK ONLY.

Guys.... if I thought anyone was gonna take "Spec Short Course" racing this seriously, I would have written a much more limiting rule book. I do not want to see someone with tires that have been grooved that look like somebody spent hours just for a tenth... I mean it is a class based on RTR's, meant to be basic, buy a truck and come race it. If you really think people will run truck a because its tires are better here and truck b becausd its tires are better there.... then you do not understand this class.
Short Course is the entry level dirt oval class, and a great class to get started in. All the fancy tire cutting, and living in the gray areas will kill this class. That stuff is meant for the true oval classes.
I did not post rules saying no siping of tires, and I wont add one a week before the series starts.... but please understand the "spirit" of the class.
My dad bought a new slash to come play. Bought a slash, and a battery and a charger. That is what this class is about, fun. Short Course is the only class where bumping is pretty much an acceptable thing. It is all about having fun. To me, Short Course racing dominates the Fun per Dollar ratio.... Lets keep it that way.

don't misunderstand matt there is a wink at the end of my post. it was all in good fun of the 5 tracks the slash and strike will do great on at least 2 the sc10 and blitz out to do well on the other 2 as for the 5th one i am not sure its up in the air. there wont be any sipping on my tires i dont even know how to do it LOL. as for simple green well thats just to clean them, at least at rescue anyhow it gets hard to get off the mud without it. its all good matt we just were not sure if you could run blitz tires on a slash and so on and so forth. we know now. no hybrids got it :) so even though the ideal truck might be a sc10 with a slash esc and a losi motor with kyosho tires.... i cant afford that and it should not be there no hybrids!!! just from my personal experience i'd say 95% of all the people i ever raced with don't even come close to grey area or cheating. i just hate being the one who always seems to find the guy with the cheater stuff due to: 1. no teching 2. poor sportsman ship of that particular driver. (the win at all costs kind). and and the only thing that killing this class so far are all the guys who went to mod style and 4x4's before that we had 30-60 stock trucks then about 35 or more went to open classes. spending another 200 on a tekin and 80 on a BL THATS what will kill the class as guys like me can afford the spec stock and thats about it, hell i cant even afford new tires most mine are half bald. but i have fun in stock thats why i like it. so no worries matt its all about fun we know that... i have seem more smack and S*^^ talking in the other classes so we can have our little words here and there too. :D
edit: is it just me or do the smileys on this forum lack expression? LMAO!

Phantom - I am glad you now understand the intent of the rules... And I saw the smiley, but like you said, they lack expression...coulda been a evil gring like you were gonna push things.... or a nice playful one...LOL.
I am going to announce something on the Main thread so everyone will understand the tech procedures....
So, check it out!
