View Full Version : DODC Spec Equipment

Rob,
I know this is early, BUT... Seeing as we are coming into a possible transition year I feel I have a few valid, albeit early, questions.
Will the current DODC Spec equipment be phased into and allowed to be run concurrently w/ any new incoming equipment? Or will it cease to be allowed once the new stuff is announced?
When is the earliest we will be notified that new "branded" equipment is in the works? And the drop date of this.
I ask because many of us have equipment that is aging and will need to be replaced. I am sure that more than a few of us would want to know well in advance if we buy something new that we will be able to use it for a while.
Many of us do not lean on our stuff as hard as we do at the OW, so while we can start the year on what we used there, in a few months it will need to be replaced. I just don't want to see a group of my friends angry that they purchased new stuff, say in June or July to finish the summer only to learn that it will be obsolete a month or two later.
Respectfully

what new equipment?
The current brands of DODC equip have been given a 2 yr lock down. After 2 yrs this equipment may or may not change....but it has been guaranteed for at least 2 yrs. This means it could potentially change toward the end of this year.
Meaning next years batts could be 5000 mah 40c rated w/ DODC branding, or motors could be a diff manufacturer etc...

It is not a question of why, but if there is something better or cheaper it COULD be changed to benifit the racers and supporters of the DODC. And is well within the realm of something the DODC can do.

Someone else just asked me about this recently. It seems that there is an assumption that we will be utilizing new Spec equipment at the end of this year which is not necessarily the case. From the begining the discussions with the 2 year time frame were simply the minimum time frame we expected to be able to get the same equipment from the current manufacturers. It was in no way intended that after 2 years we would automatically switch to new equipment.
The whole idea from the inception was to be able to utilize the same motors and batteries for as long as possible. If at some point the manufacturers decide to phase out this equipment than we will obviously need some type of replacement. Both SMC and Novak understand the dynamics of our program and are very supportive of what we have worked for. I would expect that any change in the production of this equipment or any decision to discontinue it will come with enough time for us to implement new equipment with some type of grace period or phased in process over a several month span.
Now, that being said, understand that the motor and battery markeplace right now is very dynamic. My hope is that call from a manufacturer would never come, but the reality is that it could also come next week, there is just no way to know for sure. I can assure you however that we are always looking at our options with the current equipment offered and would do our best in that situation to minimize the financial and logistical issues that would come with that decision. One of the primary goals of this whole spec concept was to help minimize the cost to the racers while these new technoligies were evolvoing. I promise you that is still one of our primary concerns.
Hope that helps clarify any misunderstandings.

I by no means was under this assumption. However I do know that these items are in a constant state of change lately. I just know that you had a 2 yr commitment at a MINIMUM. That said, I thank you for your hard work and reply.
My post wasn't meant to state there WAS a change, but the potential is there for one based loosly on your timeframe estimate.

Lipos have got alot better in the last year. The smc 3200 is overdue to be updated to a higher c rated battery . I just took one apart that I have had for a year and the cells had a 8-09 date on it and it was a 3300 cell. Alot of the cheap chinese 40 c batteries that can be charged at 5 c are selling for around 20 bucks. If the hobby shops doubled the price it would still be a better battery for a much cheaper price. The best IMO would still be Thunder power but they are proud of them on the price. 70 dollars for an outdated battery is way too much even if the tracks are making half of that in profit. I may be wrong on this but chances are these batteries have not been produced for awhile and the ones your buying now have been in storage mode for awhile. Anyone want to take one apart and look at the dates on the cells to check? Thanks to RJ for bringing this up as I have been thinking about it for awhile. The novak motors are still some of the best going and should not need updated for awhile.

Why change? Every Dodc battery I have ever bought has had very similar numbers and those numbers hold up for quite awhile. I see no reason to change. If it ain't broke don't fix it. There are also alot of good used dodc batteries out there for the lower budget racers.

I agree with Bob. Theres nothing wrong with the current DODC batteries. We don't need a battery with a higher C rating, or a larger capactiy.

the only thing a c rating does is give you a higher burst rate. more useful in the airplane world than the car world as we would barely feel that other than off the start line or if stopped in an accident and have to take off. our current battery is a good battery at a competitive price to the rest at the same price.

Agreed. The reason the SMC 3200 28C was chosen was due to the fact that it wasn't going to change any time soon, and it hasn't since it's inception. It has been a good, consistent pack without a change in manufacturing or performance from the original packs to the current ones. SMC has done an exceptional job keeping their manufacturer producing these packs with the same chemistry and consistency - not common in the lipo world.
There are cheaper packs available, absolutely. These are not consistent and do not have the quality or life span of the SMC's. Besides, any change in the DODC products would mean everyone would have to buy the new stuff to maintain a level playing field.

I've been runng my SMC DODC packs for almost 2 years. Never in R/C racing have I been able to run anything that long. On the other hand I think Novak is the one slipping. The newer Novak motors have not performed at all what the older generation of motors did. They still are great motors but there are some changes on the new ones that I think have hurt the lifespan of the motor. And let's not just say it's because of the Dynamic timing either. I've seen too many Novak Spec Speed controls and 17.5 motors going bad.

the 17-5 idea is a great one but there is a huge difference in one motor to the next. I bought a system two days before the freeze and the motot was so slow I couldn't even race it and the other one I bought is a rocket. need to figure a way to level this out a bit is all.

i think were all getting alittle out of hand on a few things here. we have been running 17.5 dodc edms in ny for past 2 years. its our biggest class by alot here also and we havent had any issues with motors or one bein tons better. sure u might get one thats a dog and one thats above average. thats just manufacturing but thats a random event. i think theres more conspiracy instead of logic in alot of this info

Yes, rotors can be replaced just like bearings or any other part that may go bad. Any parts replaced must be replaced with factory OEM parts.
