View Full Version : 19th USOWC will be at Bumps and Jumps

Custom Works RC
September 9th, 2009, 7:18 PM
Custom Works is happy to announce that this years running of the US Open Wheel Championships will be held at Bumps and Jumps RC Speedway in Etters, PA. The date for the 19th running of this event will be Dec 8th-13th 2009. This will be the first time that B&J has hosted the Open Wheel race. Track owner Chris Mckinney has done a great job hosting large events like the February Freeze in the past and we expect that he will do a great job with this event as well. Scotty Ernst will once again be the race director and as most of you know when it comes to putting on a great show there is no one better than Scotty and the crew.

We are looking at adding a few tweaks to the format for this year that will hopefully make for a better race for all involved, more info on that shortly. Im sure the first question many of you may have is where will we put everyone. Well Chris has already started working on some improvements that we feel will be sufficient for the number of racers we expect. For time reasons Entries will be limited to 350 entries this year, this was the plan last year and will be the case this year. It is great to have an event with 450 entries but there are drawbacks to it as well. We feel that limiting the entries to a more managable number will make the event much better for those involved.

Any info that is not posted here means it has not been finalized yet, ie: classes, entry dates, schedule etc. I will post that info as soon as it has been finalized, probably Friday or Monday. I don't want to post incomplete or incorrect info but I did want to at least get the info that we do have out so you can begin making plans and to squash the rumor mills.

More info coming soon......

Congrats on the race Chris, I really enjoyed the Freeze year before last. But without a 4x4 and the point its December in PA ! Just not sure....
Will there be enough parking for everyone, especially with all the big rigs and trailers? with the snow??

It is no secret that owning this type of business has been my childhood dream.
It almost took Rob's post to bring me to reality that it was really here.
For Bumps and Jumps to be known as the home of the 2009 us open wheel - reminds me of when I was 12. When I think about the tracks that have hosted this race over the years, it really is an honor to be associated with them, and I am beyond excited for December to get here. I have some great people helping make the business what it is, and I am sure with all their help it will be a great event. The only thing I can personally do is to promise to do everything I can to ensure everyone has a good time. So if you see something that you are a little unsure about or something I can do better - please let me know.
See you all soon
Thanks

Guys there are a lot of hotels near by & a lot of great food in the area. Campers will not be needed, so that clears a LOT of parking spaces. We have not had more than 2" of snow here in Pa in probably 10+ years. I have faith that there will be plenty of room, heck I might even just pit at home & bring the cars over to race! :D

I vote for wingless sprint to be added, you don't get much more fun than that. ;)

It worked out well for years if I remember correctly... ;)

The remember the first time I ever walked into Kranzel's, my dirt oval team consisted of myself, Paul Brauer, Osama Bin Burrhart and Mike Conkey - and was asked to meet and help some Brian Wreck-your-bridge kid, as a favor for Patrick Kiven of Ballistic batteries.
After watching you flounder for the first 2 rounds, I wrote you off in my mind - even with David Kranzel reassuring me, "Trust me, Brian will turn it on like he flipped a switch in the last round. We've seen it time after time..." Yeah, right.
Sure enough, you went out and layed down TQ's and records in about every class you ran in the last round!

Yeah I guess I owe Patrick one for putting in the good word for me. "This Putnam guy's got the motor thing figured out pretty well." I was definitely floundering trying to build, cut, and tune my own mod motors without much equipment. I still can't believe I didn't dump during that mod sprint run after you told me years later that you ran out of time and didn't even cut the comm. We were like Brown/Wolfgang for a while after that. Those were good days.

this is a pain..... Rob usually deals w/ the entries

A pain for who?
I will be taking entries this year
let's do a little simple math
assume 180 people - each keeping me on the phone for 5 minutes (which is probably low - you would certainly be at least 10 minutes :D)
add 1.5 minute to enter info into the database
add 1.5 minutes to enter the info in the the credit card machine.
this totals 8 minutes per person x 180 people = 24 hours of phone time
Now this seems ok if was all non stop I could be done in 3 days work but last year Rob and Arnie spent all week on the phone, because the phone does not ring every second, there is some downtime. Now I am only one person with one phone line and I think you can see the intelligent solution - rcsignup.com
If I were a betting man I would say your chances of signing up for the race and getting in through rcsignup.com would be better then trying to call me when I am on the phone with a long winded west virginian such as yourself. :D

This post was all in fun but I think you can all appreciate the situation.

I will be parking all motor homes in front of and behind the mobile home about 300' from the building, and there are no hookups.

Will there be a list of classes? and how much per entry?

Custom Works RC
September 17th, 2009, 7:29 PM
Classes will be the same as last year.

ELECTRIC CLASSES
13.5 DODC SPEC Sprint
13.5 DODC SPEC EDM
13.5 DODC SPEC Latemodel
Mod Sprint
Mod EDM

NITRO CLASSES
Limited Sprint
Limited Latemodel
Nitro Sprint
Nitro EDM
Nitro Latemodel

Entry Fee is $45.00 per class.

As Chris mentioned he will be handling the Entries this year and how ever he sees fit to handle that is fine with me, as long as I dont have to do it, LOL. I will post additional info soon as far as when entries will start being taking and the tentative schedule for the event. Sorry for the delay but I've had a sinus infection all week and have not gotten to everything that was on my agenda. As soon as we have the rest of the info sorted out It will be posted. I promise.

Thanks

A pain for who?
I will be taking entries this year
let's do a little simple math
assume 180 people - each keeping me on the phone for 5 minutes (which is probably low - you would certainly be at least 10 minutes :D)
add 1.5 minute to enter info into the database
add 1.5 minutes to enter the info in the the credit card machine.
this totals 8 minutes per person x 180 people = 24 hours of phone time
Now this seems ok if was all non stop I could be done in 3 days work but last year Rob and Arnie spent all week on the phone, because the phone does not ring every second, there is some downtime. i really don't care Chris. I am as easy of a person to deal with when it comes to this. just wanted to see a long winded response from a pensylvainianer... us Floridians are too laid back to really care!

You need to take into consideration that the 13.5 LM's will be splintered into the EDM classes. A decent amount of us who run the LM's would rather run the EDM's because the racing tends to be cleaner.

The one banked track that was in Carlisle has been closed for a while. The other track was at the Carlisle Sports Emporium and I don't believe they have the sprint carts anymore. There used to be 5 or 6 indoor sprint kart tracks in the area but they've all closed as far as I know.

I didn't read through all 6 pages but.....

I know it's not scheduled for this year, but was wondering if there was any plans to incorporate an 8th scale Late Model class for future events? IMO the 8th LM is one of the fastest growing classes in DO by far, since it is fairly easy for an ex-offroad racer to convert.

I truly hope that one of the biggest dirt oval races of the year can figure out how to fit atleast 1 class of 8th scale in to their "limited entry" schedule especially since there is already multiple classes for both electric and nitro sprint, LM and EDM.

There is no manufacturer support to facilitate this.

Where is this the fastest growing? And what kind of national #'s do you have to support this?

Call Losi up and ask them to put on a National 8th Latemodel Nats, and see what kind of entry you get.

Some purists will argue that latemodels have no place in the US Open Wheel Championships.

I don't think that they should be at the OW. BUT, they are probably the fastest growing class in D.O. They are growing rapidly West of PA. OH is getting 20-30 almost every week at one track for one class. There were 50 + in this class at the Chili Bowl Jr. this year.

So there RJ, is that good enough numbers for ya?:p;)

The last time I checked on the web site, you need at least 64 cars to start a new class @ the Dreamworld.

And we all know that is the place by which all tracks and sanctioning bodies are measured.;)
