View Full Version : Remove the Comp Camaro Body?

Team GFRP
August 11th, 2009, 2:17 PM
I'm going out on a limb here. It is my opinion that the Comp Camaro body should not be on the approved body list. I think that it has an advantage over the other "more realistic" bodies. Having such an angled nose and smaller greenhouse allows more air to be put where it is needed. All of the bodies on the list resemble today's late models except this one.

Thoughts, comments, hate mail, and other forms of bashing my opinion are welcome:D

Thanks

To some extent I agree with you and have told other people that myself. When the list was created it was one of only a few 9" bodies that were readily available and that is also a criteria that is considered with the bodies that are approved they need to be easy for people everywhere to get a hold of. At this point any changes to the approved body list will come at the end of this calandar year along with any rules revisions.

I use the camaro body as well at the FW Rocket body. The camaro body is faster but I have found that the Rocket body works well at some tracks. I'm not going to vote because I like both bodies but I think the camaro really does not look like the current full-size late models racing today.

They are under $20, 9" wide and easy to get. Besides don't you use C&M bodies?

I think the people whom the body benefits is in the minority, maybe the top 3% of the drivers?

Leave them for now....

OR make and sell a more modern body that weighs the same w/ the same frontal area and angle w/ a matching roof profile. Get it approved and move on!

I also run both the Camaro & Rocket bodies & do agree the Camaro doesn't resemble the current "REAL LATEMODEL", but I am quite curious why people think it should be taken off the approved list. Like Rob said it is one of a few that are 9in. wide & is avail. everywhere.

Also, I am very curious why Dustin would be inquiring about this. To my knowledge you run Sprinters & EDM,s.

Personally, I can speak from experience, that the Camaro keeps the cars more stable @ most tracks i've been to, which makes for better & closer racing. I know @ one of our local tracks this is, for the most part, the body of choice.

The rules are what they are until @ least January if im not mistaken, but whatever the "Powers to be" decide I guess we will all have to abide by that decision.

Dustin, I am not looking to start anything & you are correct that you are intitled to your opinion, but like I said, why is this an issue w/you. Sorry , I guess my curiosity got the best of me !

GO FAST TURN LEFT ! Keith S.

P.S. I have won w/both bodies !

I don't run the class. Just an observation. I doubt if someone made a comperable body it would get approved.

This isn't an attack on anything it is just my opinion and I know others share the same feeling as I do.

I'm glad that Rob took it how I meant it to be. He understands my side of it, I think...

I think I understand where you are coming from, however I think you are wrong in the assumption that a more modern version of the body based on my description wouldn't get approved. I believe that while Rob is looked at as the ONE in charge, I know he isn't as narrow minded in the thinking that if a body like I described were to be denied, everyone would see the transparency to the decision. And I doubt Rob is also the sole deciding factor in the approval process.

From what I understand it isn't cheap to make a mold, so I doubt anyone would just make one on a whim and expect it to be approved w/o issue.

From talking to Rob, the DODC deal is meant to help the hobby grow, and try to the best of his abilities to keep his CW job seperate from that.

We ran them last weekend at Bill's. I had a car there that I let one of my team guys run. I just noticed that the Camaro body looked out of place compared to the other's that were there. I like the realism of the LM class.

As a person that runs Late Model on a weekly basis, I've often wondered why this body was legal. It doesn't look like late model's of today and the bodies that do are at a distinct disadvantage. Sprint cars and EDM's look pretty close to todays dirt cars.

The list of approved bodies that we started with last year was the same list that had already been in place for the open wheel rules the previous year. We added a few bodies that needed to be added and deleted a few that were under 9" and that is the list that we went with. I already stated my own personal opinion on this as well as my reason as to why they are still on the list.

To this point Mike Ottinger of C&M is the only person who has contacted me regarding what is required to have future bodies approved and I believe he understands the intention and procedure that goes along with the body approval process.

As I stated any changes to the list will not happen until end of year. The whole intention and reason for this is to keep peoples racing programs and the rules consistent for an extended period of time and as others have noted not every hobby shop in the country has easy access to all of the other legal 9"bodies.

If these are taken off the DODC legal list will they still be produced? I'd still like to run one for local weekly racing. ;)

LOL there is not one edm body that is competitive the even comes close to resembling a real DIRT mod!!! Nothing wrong with the camaro keep it looks a lot better then guys putting 10" bodies on electric cars thats not realistic at all!!

I disagree with this statement as I know that Steve Salvas runs the Factory Works on his latemodel and he is normally faster then anyone in the class that runs the CW Open Comp. Camaro...thats my two cents

I will say that most of the guys that seem to be against the camaro don't even run electric late model classes. I have run both bodies as well as Keith, and I find them to work fine on different tracks. And we all know that Steve is fast as hell in whatever class he races.

That is a very good observation Beach. I guess no matter what is done your never going to make everyone happy, but I do also agree w/Lauden that if any class looks unrealistic it's the EDM's. Oh well, it is what it is.

In some ways DODC is like Nascar, meaning the rules are put into place to keep the playing field as equal as possible. Everyone has the oppurtunity to run any of the approved bodies.

As far as "Real Looking" bodies go, Nascar bodies don't look like the real cars on the road today either ! Just some food for thought. Plus the Pro Comp Camaro has been around forever & now people wanna complain. Go figure !

There is a comparable body, Murdocks has them by Wide Tunnel. Its called the Exterminator. Most of us old farts used them because they were less expensive than the CW bodies 20 years ago.

Only if we can have side dams back.

I would think with all the new bodies out, they would busy enough sanctioning those instead. I run one, and I really do not want to change to one of the newer designs. Its on the approved list along with a ton of others, I would prefer it stays there. There are plenty to choose from, so pic one, and run it. I feel that some of the others have too much front down force for my car, and that's why I prefer this style as it tends to have less front downforce yet still allow a soft spring for good handling. I have tried a few different ones, and always end up back to this one for my car, and I would prefer to keep it that way and move on.

Then why is this thread even here? The guy who started it does'nt even run the class or knows nothing about it. Talk about getting wordy behind a keyboard.

BTW, nobody has to ask anybody, It's a public forum. Nobody ask me either but I think the edms dont look anything like a real one. I would run them if they looked like an actual race car. Thats why people have opinions and preferences.

Back to the topic, I would run an open comp If I could, it's one of my favorite bodies, But I have a dynotech and they wont fit. So I am forced to run a FW body. I personally dont see how the difference would be that big. The FW has a sharp nose and really good downforce. I have actually run less spoiler then most of the open comp guys.
