We had the same issue in offroad, first we placed the screw that tightens the diff on the same side as the slipper, this helped the screw from backing out and grinding the diff balls on the plates, also carbide ball operate smoother than the stockers.
Once you have the new diff together, take a variable speed dremel, or mill press and break the diff in, this will give a better seet of the balls with out the grunt of the motor doing it and slipping them.
When you put the diff together, go all the way down till the plastic ears touch, back it off an 1/8 turn and breakin the diff. This is how i did all my GT2 diffs and for others as well, and they where silky smooth and lasted many weekends.

Doug Carter made a post on how to build a diff some time ago. The big thing I learned was to sand the diff rings on a flat surface. It will make the diff real smooth.
