View Full Version : Gear Diff Tranny Case

The design work is done on the new SC10 style gear diff tranny. I will be machining them early next week. These will be a replacement for the current B3 tranny. The gear diff should get rid of the problem with diffs going bad in one or two runs with the big motors we now run in mod. They should also allow for greater adjustment within the diff itself. The retail price will be the same as our current 2.60 tranny @ $43.95.
Pics will be up as soon as they are finished. Hopefully mid next week.
Thanks

Cool product Dustin.
I guess the drive cups between the ball diff and the gear diff are the same distance apart?? In other words, you can use the same bones?
Also, was the diff "gear" the same size/teeth? In other words, is the final drive ratio the same?
If the interest is high enough that you decide to build a GT case, I would certainly buy one to try out.

Dogbone length should be the same. The outdrives are shorter on the new tranny. Same ratio as well 52 teeth giving a 2.60 ratio. As for the GT case I will look into it. I will need to get one laser scanned in.

I know a couple of Wichita racers that would love a GT one as well....lol Cool items you are coming out with!

Yes a b3 is a 2.40 my tranny is a 2.60 with the outside shape similar to a b3. The new tranny will be a 2.60 ratio just like the one we currently make.

There are a few things different. The bearings are a metric bearing and the case itself is wider.

Case only.

Yep. Only the Diff assembly would be different.

Here is a picture of the diff that would be used with the new tranny. It is a 2.60 ratio (52t). It is the stock diff out of Associated's new SC10 truck. The associated part number for the diff is #9827. The tranny will use the standard b3/b4 idler gear with bearings in it. The idler shaft. Both the B3 and B4 topshaft will be usable in the tranny as well. Hopefully this clears a few things up.
Thanks for the compliments guys.

Do you have any idea what it lists for?
I'll answer my own question - $24.95 at Stormer

Prototype is done. I will be testing it tonight. As long as everything goes well we should have them available within 2 weeks. I do know that on the Terminator Based cars that you will need to grind on the arm mount. The diff gear is wider and hits the mounts. We will be modifying our mounts to solve this problem. I'm going to check into the fitment in a CW car tonight as well.
Pics will be up soon.:D

Update on the case...
I tested it on Friday night. The gears seemed to strip quickly. I talked to Associated this morning and they said that I had one of the early gear sets. They changed the material that they used for the diff gear itself. When they did that, the new material shrinks more than the original. Thus making the mesh no good. They have since added shims to the kits and have no more issues. They are going to send me more gears so I can test them again this weekend. They are confident that I will have no more issues with the gears. So just stay tuned until next week. Hopefully I will have a better progress report. I'm testing these with a very heavy dirt track with buggy tires. Possibly the hardest conditions for a diff.

Was this the external (diff gear to idler) mesh that was affected or something internal to the diff (spider gears, etc)? Where are the shims used?

It was the mesh between the crown and the spider gears. They are shimming the gears just to tighten up the mesh.

Any word on how well the new shimmed diff. worked?
It worked Flawlessly. It felt the same at the end of the night as it did at the start. I'm going to take it apart tonight to see if there is any wear. If no signs of wear, I will be starting production on them next week. My machine is booked up this week. Stay tuned for more info. I do think that these will be a great asset to racing.

OK - so now that you have it all figured out - can we get a full parts list with part numbers and estimated cost? Will there be an option to get all of the parts in one package?

Ran the gear diff in a GBX2 outlaw sprintcar last weekend at the RC Supernationals in Boone Iowa. Track had a ton of grip and it was eating the ball diff's alive. But the gear diffs held together perfectly. Going to get another one to put in my other car.
Good Work Dustin.

Dylan Watier ran a gear diff transmission in his car this past saturday at the Mr Dirt series race and his car was DIALED.
Havnt seen one run on a high bite track yet, but on outdoor tracks with not not so much bite, these things hook up!

I raced this weekend at a clay indoor oval with buggy tires, and I did have some trouble with the internal gears slipping. The sun gear (the one attached to the outdrive) on one side was chewed up, fouled the oil pretty good. It may have been going bad before this.
When I replaced the gear, I took the shim they tell you to use between the outdrive cup and the outside of the differential (bottom) gear, and moved it inside the differential gear where the rest of the shims go. This moved the internal gears a bit closer together. I had no problems afterwards, with sweet, sweet diff action to boot.:thumbsup:
The bushing on the gear is steel anyway, so I don't think there should be any problems.
I also had a ball diff turn into a spool while I was waiting on parts from the main hobby shop.

The harder you want the car to rotate and turn center off, the lighter you go on oil. I have been running 90wt Losi shock oil in an Outlaw with rubber tires. A buddy tried this with a Havoc, but it was too much for him. His car is pretty free though. He probably could have started getting into the 1/8 diff oils, 1K-2K wt.

As far as I know the only failures have been with bad shims and or really high bite tracks with big big motors. Not 100% sure. I know that a high bite track with a 5.5 I have had no issues myself.

Been running one on a VERY High Bite Foam tire track for 2 Months (racing twice a week), and its been holding up excellent. Still as smooth as it was when it was brand new. No leaks, no problems.
