Mini Late Model
So far the mini late model class has had about twice as many drivers as the cars that have been on the track! The radios are getting passed around like...insert dirty joke here! After four races, we have had three different winners with each of them each capturing the TQ as well. Cliff Wilkinson, the latest to capture the TQ and win, handed his radio off to Mouse for the third round of qualifying on Sunday. Mouse promptly made his way around to the fastest run of the day and narrowly missed the track record. Doug Welker is quickly figuring out his mini and pulled out the TQ and win last Wed. before losing a motor on Sunday that took him out of the battle. Nitro on roader Randy Ramsey took a rent-a-ride to second qualifier on Sunday, but had to leave before the mains started. The car owner, Chad Mouser, drove it in the main but really had to fight it as the traction seemed to disappear on that car. I believe that he did turn the fastest lap with it, but I am pretty sure that I saw his eyes closed and his fingers crossed when he did it. Mini does not even begin to describe the way that these oval cars look to Jay Landolt. I hear that Jay has been oval racing cars that are about 18 times bigger than these. With a borrowed mini, Jay made his return to the RC oval circuit and was able to click off the fastest laps of the day before handing the radio over to the car owner for the main. Matt Morton then took it from there and cruised to a second place finish in the A main. Teddy O’Dell put up a great battle with Doug last Wed. in the main before settling for second. Ron Roy ran a few qualifiers last Wed. with Rob Fayant’s mini and put together one of the fastest runs on the track so far. Rob Fayant has not run his mini since the first two races, but he holds the second fastest run on the track so far and is one of only three drivers to break the 40 lap barrier. Finally, Team Toon racer from back in the day, Mike Kelm, is currently the only driver with two TQ’s and wins and is the current track record holder.

Truck
With the truck class still searching for an identity, it is quickly becoming one of the biggest classes on the track. The trucks have had the second largest number of racers thus far, behind the sprint car class. For the most part, they still look like they looked all season on the off road track with the exception of the ride height. I have heard that some may soon be showing up with the MDM type and purpose built dirt oval truck bodies. The trucks have been surprisingly fast with lap times dipping into the low 5 second range. Rob Fayant, Dennis Hart, and Rusty Kaiser all have one truck race under their belts now with a 3rd place finish for Rob while Dennis and Rusty both finished 5th in their A mains. Teddy O’Dell finished 3rd and 6th in his two races, while Barry Bechtel has a 3rd, 4th, and a 6th place finish. Derek Wallace held on to TQ until the final round yesterday and settled for 2nd in the main after finishing 3rd and 5th in his previous races while Dan Ryan has a 2nd place finish to go along with a 4th. The four wins to this point have been split between three racers with Lindell Gray capturing the TQ and win in race one to go with a 4th place finish in the second race. Ron Roy has captured two TQ’s so far and has a win and a 2nd place finish and currently holds the track record be 0.7 seconds over Phillip Van Booven. Phillip has TQ’ d once and has two wins and a second place finish so far this season.

MDM
The MDM class seems to have an exciting race each time on the track and none were more exciting than the one this past Sunday. The race started with a great battle between Lindell Gray and Matt Morton that went back and forth until about 1/2 way into the race. 18 laps in Chad Mouser went a little high into turn one and caught the pipe heading into the pits which sent his car air born into the scoring booth where it grabbed the scoring loop cable and pulled the AMB box off the table. As it dangled at my feet from the cable wrapped around its wheel there was a loud crash that came from the middle of the front straight. By the time that I looked up, there were cars and parts scattered throughout the entire front stretch that left almost no room for the remaining cars to fit through. After a quick clean up we found the two cars that were battling for the lead were now crippled on the infield. Matt Morton was left with only ½ of his front end still on it and Lindell’s car had parts hanging off of it. From what I am told, it appears that another car broke loose in front of them before either of them could react, spinning one of them around into a head on collision with the other. Matt was obviously out and Lindell sat out several laps before realizing that it was only his front bumper that broke off and returning to finish the race. The rest of the race was then a close battle between the other five cars before finishing up with the top 4 cars all running on the same lap. Keith Wilbert made his way from 6th qualifier all the way to the top for his first win of the season after a 5th place finish in race one. Rob Fayant finished 2nd for his second time this season, while Mitch McMillen took 3rd in his first race on the track. Chad Mouser finished 4th in his first race and Jerry McMillen held on for 5th after picking up two previous wins and a second place finish. Lindell Gray had to settle for 6th after a TQ, track record, and 2nd place finish his last time out. Matt Morton reclaimed his track record with his second TQ, but does not have much to show for it with that 7th place and a 4th place finish in race one. Jim Aumann captured the remaining win in race one while Kenny Tourville finished 3rd in that race.

Mod Sprint
Sprint competition really seems to be heating up now. Off road racers Ron Roy, Lindell Gray, Eddie Gaines, and Steve Kriete have really stepped up and are getting this oval thing figured out. Ron and Eddie each have an A main win already. Lindell has qualified 3rd and finished 3rd in each of his first two races with a sprint car despite being handicapped by a Frankensteined creation out of my basement. Steve Kriete is turning laps with his Outlaw that are right with the leaders, and with some better luck, I would look for him to be right at the top soon. Todd Blumoff, on roader who also shifted over to some off road this past winter, came out and tried out his lefthanders with an Outlaw loaner from Eddie. He quickly put himself on pace with the leaders and even bought himself a Hyperdrive sprinter before the night was over. Gary Landolt, after a 15 year break from oval back in the Pontoon days, is back up running at the top and is still not even close to where he will be in the coming weeks. Terry McDonald, who is still trying to get the cobwebs blown off of his direct drive Enforcer that is older than over 1/2 of our racers, led most of the main on Wed. before finishing second in a race that had the top three separated by 1.7 seconds! Dennis Martinez spent a lot of his time fighting an ill handling car his first time on the track, but was drastically improving with each run as it started coming around. Kevin Klyber, a name that I feared growing up on the STL ovals years ago, also improved with each run on Sunday and found himself 4th on the grid when the A main came around. Nick Antonovich switched over to his direct drive car this time out after a second place effort in the first race of the season. After fighting a long battle with a fully sway barred car, he pulled them off and immediately improved to a B main win and 4th place finish in the A. Jay Landolt showed up with a sprinter that was not quite ready to race yet, but I did see him take it around the track a few times with a borrowed wing before the day was over. I am looking for him to be just as fast as the kid he was back in the 'Toon days! I heard a rumor today that we could see another old timer making his way out to the track on the next Sunday race. Skip Bornmueller has been in the basement uncovering and brushing off some of the amazing creations that a lot of us remember from back in the day. Finally we have Eugene Ryder...well he has been Eugene Ryder! With a TQ, an A main win, and a track record both times out, you could say that he has been dominating...so far!!

EDM
So far, the EDM class has been the fastest class on the track, but has also been the smallest class on the track. Eddie Gaines and Eugene Ryder may be headed out soon with an EDM as well as Randy Ramsey and two time on road national champion Andrew Ellis. Race one was dominated by Steve Smith who turned 49 laps with a 4.594 fast lap while Scott McDonald struggled with his car throughout the day. Race two found the tables turned with Steve Smith failing to get a good hold of his car while Scott McDonald figured it out turning 52 laps along with a fast lap of 4.471. For race three and four Steve came back in dominating form and shattered Scott’s previous records with 55 laps and a 4.212 fast lap and followed it up this Sunday with 55 laps and a 4.172 fast lap. Hopefully Scott will make it a battle again soon before he has to pull out his track owner card and start docking laps!!!

4wd Open Mod
There has been alot of interest shown in this 4wd class and even a few laps turned by several different cars. Unfortunately, it has not been enough to really get the class up and running yet. On opening day, two racers showed up and ran the only 4wd race to date. Jim Aumann ran his converted AE TC3 while Eddie Gaines tried out the old school Custom Works Dominator. Neither driver ever really dialed their car in fully, but it was easy to see that the 4wd Open class could be the fastest class on the track! Eddie was able to click off the overall fastest laps on the track in qualifying and turned in a 45 lap run while struggling with the ill handling car. In the main, Jim Aumann was able to keep the consistancy a little better than Eddie and pulled off the victory.
Since that race there have been several 4wd's trickle out to the track, but never more than one at a time. Hopefully they will all get their timing and their set ups together so that we can see this class take off and dominate the track records like it should. I know that mine is close to hitting the track!!
