I'm a relative newbie to Smac track (been back into the hobby and racing at SMAC for about 2 months now) and I've really enjoyed it. Well run program and nice, helpful people all around. I've known that smac was changing to dirt oval soooo.........last night I snagged a mini-late model from Checkered Flag! I've only raced offroad since I started (been off and on in the hobby since '95) so I really don't know what to expect, but I figured for under 200 dollars why the hell not ?
What kind of charger are you guys using for the little NIMH battery ? I see it's too small for my Duratrax Onyx and stock wall charger takes over 3 hours to charge!
I'm looking forward to turning left on Weds nights with the rest of you guys!
Thanks,
Doug

Hey Doug, you'll love the little Latemodel. I have 2 that we are going to race, one for me and one for my son.
We use a Pit Bull by Comp Electronics. I have been told to charge at anywhere from 1 amp to 3 amps. I charge at 2 amps. You might want to pick up a couple packs of Deans connectors though.

I picked up a set of Deans connectors but when I saw how small the wires were I wondered if it was ok to put Deans on em'. So I'm good to put them on the ESC and battery ?

definately put the deans plugs on. Yo might want to check out some Duratrax 1600 mah nimah batteries as they have WAY more punch than the stock battery. I might know a guy that has some good used ones for sale. After you burn up the stock motor, just plan on buying the Castle Creations 4200kv system. That is the spec system we all run. Just to avoid confusion, brushed & brushless do usually run togather, it's just that the brushless is much less hassle.

You might check and see if you can get an adapter that will work with your Onyx. I bought a wire with the same end as my receiver battery when I had a nitro car and it was only a few bucks. Mark Twain would probably be able to help.

Do you guys use the regular Deans plugs or the Deans micro plugs for the small batteries?

Most guys up here have been using the regular Dean's plugs. The micro ones are a PIA (small)... plus using the regular ones is more standard to everyone's chargers from the 1/10 scale batteries.

Racing in the mini class thus far has been awesome. Every race it seems like any car is capable of TQing. After blowing my motor after just two weeks of racing I'm going to bite the bullet and just go brushless right now. What kind of pinion are you brushless guys running ?

I had really good luck over the winter with the Mamba Pro ESC and the 4200KV motor. Temps were low and it was considerably more linear in it's power delivery than the other sensorless systems I have used. I think it's about $125 for the ESC and motor. I ran mine for 15 race days and it never missed a beat. Good luck.

Get a 50 and a 54 spur. then get 21 to 23 pinion gears and you will have it pretty well covered. I think Cliff had a 23/50 in his but im but im not sure. Cya .....Mouse

Hey Doug, after my son and I went through about 8 motors I switched to the brushless. Rob Fayant's car is really faster than mine and he's still running a brush motor.
Go to Mark Twain or Checkered Flag and see if they have the 4200 Mamba. I'll be there Wednesday with the team car. My son raced it on carpet last Saturday, so it's my turn Wednesday.
I'm running the 21/50 gears on my car.

Thanks Mike, I'll be picking up brushless sometime this week. I won't be able to miss this Weds due to a rehearsal I have to go to. I'll be back the following Weds with car setup for brushless. I also have 2 1600 packs now too. Thanks for the help.

After we got it set on Cliff's computer it's as smooth as a baby's butt. I've got a 21/50 combo and it was running barely above 100 degrees and the car was flying so I'm happy :D

What is the safe temp rage on the mamba 4200 system ? I'm running a 21/50 combo, and after a run I'm right at around 108-110 degrees. At practice yesterday I was running 5.9's and 6.0's and I need just a bit more gearing so I'd like to go up to a 22t on the pinion.

thats a little cold yet, you could easily go up 1 or even 2 teeth. Although my car didn't handle worth a damn i felt the gearing was alright, and i was geared 22/50.

There is a mini for sale at the track, but I believe that it is lacking a radio.
Speaking of that Losi radio...someone left a mini late model radio at the track last Wed.
I believe that Doug already said that it was not his. I think that it may be Chris Kaelin's.
Let me know.

Picked up a 58 and 60 spur gear for the SmacTrac mini, but could not find any pinions except a 15 and a 22. Sounds like I need a 17 or so for the stock motor. Does that sound about right?
Also need to figure out some stiffer springs for it. Someone mentioned pan car side shock springs. I think Checkered Flag has them in stock.
ThisDougsForU
June 6th, 2009, 2:17 AM
I use a very stiff pan car spring for my front right shock. The thing won't budge and that's how I like it. The rest of my springs are stock all the way around. The problem with the stock shocks is that they are very leaky. I have to add oil every couple of weeks or the car handles like garbage. This setup makes my car really stiff and keeps it on the tight side.

Found out that the SmacTrac Mini was missing a bearing in the rear hub. Guess I should have looked it over a little closer before trying to run it. I put a bearing in it and ran it today It ran O.K. and I was able to turn 40 laps with it. It TQ'd and won the main, but it was the only car on the track too! It handles alright, but it still needs more power. I geared it at 16/58, but I am not sure what kind of shape the motor is in.
