Every track needs a good 'smack talking' thread. Come on...who's gonna beat up on who? :ha:

Kelm? T-Mac? Skip B? Eugene? Certainly there's some old 'grudges' out there waiting to re-surface?:thumbsup:

This should be the most 'exciting' thread in the forum!!

Hey, what's the deal here? The only names I see here that you expect to be trash talking is old guys?

I am planning on calling Skip B. to see if he can get up the ramp to the drivers stand with that walker. Kelm is going to come racing with us again but I can't say anything bad about him, just in case we end up running foams and I have to get him to groove my tires.

By the way, does anybody know how you go about changing your name on this forum? That sign in name is from 1970 when I had a particularly bad night before a race day and no longer applies.

All right now, enough of this frivolity, on to a more serious subject (tires).

Being one of the original old timers in this dirt oval venue, I remember well all the fun we had when we switched first to foam tires and then to silicone on our dirt oval cars at Pontoon Beach and other tracks around the country. I, along with a very select few am a real fan of silicone tires>

However, and this is a big however, I do remember what the tire swap eventually did to the dirt oval racing at Pontoon Beach. We had already found that if you wanted to run dirt oval anywhere in the country, you ran a Custom Works car or you were at the back of the field. This caused some problems because they were expensive and nto handled by any of the hobby shops in St. Louis. This was not however the big problem.

When we went to foam tires it became evident that the entry level, new racers were not able to compete since set up and driving skills became more important. It was also the case that tires had to be grooved in just the right manner to hook up well. Then there was the problem that after just a day or two of racing the edges wore off the grooves and the tires had to be turned down and grooved again to obtain maximum traction and as is usual in our sport, newer and better compounds came out every week or two.

This ran off a number of racers who couldn't keep up with the fanatics that the rest of us had become. Those of us who were able to keep up and run at the front of the pack were now really bothered by those who couldn't and were in the way of us making a really good run. How about 60 plus laps in 4 minutes? This caused hard feelings with those not able to run up front. We then compounded the problem by going to silicone tires that had all the same compound problems but took just the right brand of silicone and a real knack at applying the stuff. Now, how about 78 laps in 4 minutes, when the entry level driver was lucky to turn 45 or 50.

We ran off so many racers that we eventually went to pan cars. DONT GET ME STARTED ON THAT!!!!!

Even that didn't work and the track eventually died as a direct result of the tire wars in my opinion. I'm afraid that if we don't keep the tires to simple, rubber tires, the same could happen here,.

Lets talk about it.

Terry,

Great points…..few things I’d like to add…

Because Scott’s track is indoor, the surface will end up hard packed. The rubber tires that work on hard packed tracks are anything but ‘simple’. Do some research on the hot tire setup for Monee…this should give you some idea. The short version of the story is that you can’t simply bolt on a good hard packed rubber tire….it has to be ‘made’. Compound that with the fact that these tires typically cost more than a set of foams and when worn out, have to be thrown away (instead of trued and re-grooved). If this were a ‘loose track’ I’d agree that simple, buggy type tires would be the way to go.

The old foam compounds wore much faster….thankfully, we’re done with the Yellow/Green/Blue stuff. The newer compounds (silver, pink, etc) are reputed to last much longer (I’ve heard reports of guys using the same set all season at some tracks

The ‘Bullet Wedge’ type bodies and side dams have been eliminated. This goes a long way in terms of keeping the cars from becoming missiles that only a few guys could even drive.

WOW, but foams did not chase away new or current drivers back then.

Terry (shots) McDonald
February 16th, 2009, 12:54 PM
Well, looks like I have to shift gears here. I just talked to Steve Smith who has more current info than I do about tires. I am told that the new foam tires in the latetest compounds do not wear like the ones we ran back when and that they are less expensive to run than keeping up with the rubber tire wear, foam differences, side wall reinforcement, etc.

I have to admit that it has been a long time since I ran hard packed dirt oval and will concede to the more current knowledge of the guys currently running. Steve tells me that the tire rule, for the beginning of the season at least, will be one of run what you brung for tires. Once the season starts it will likely become evident which tire is superior in performance, driveability and economy.

I for one, hope that Steve is correct in that foam tires will be an economical and playing field leveling tire choice. Lets wait and see.

Maybe take the first 3-4 weeks to test and once a clear winner based on handling, cost and longevity is found make that tire a spec tire for the track/class this season excluding novice and beginner classes. You can reevaluate before each season to keep up with new tires.

I think groves are fine in foams but maybe have a track truer available and keep the grove patterns somewhat standard. I would rule out any tire that needs special skills to produce like silicone, cut tires, special inserts ECT. or have a outlaw class for them.

Scott and Steve will be the final word in setting the rules for the season, but I think your idea for a spec tire may be an answer to "Tire Wars", I think the powers to be would do well to consider this as one of the options.

As for the tire truer, I understand there will be a track supplied tire truer available as long as racers treat it with respect.

^^^ yah i believe that one  :D:D:D

My thought is, Going from buggy tires to foam tires requires a LOT of changes to make the cars fast with the different tires. 2 years ago we ran truck wheels(cut down) and wide front axles to make the cars lose the side bite that you gained from the rubber buggy tires. That was simple. Now those cars can't even compete with the new stuff. Its almost a must to have wide arms and long shocks to make them competitive. ( i can only remember a handful of cars that ran well without the wide arms, and everybody ran long shocks.) You will also need different nose and top wings for the two different types of racing. With that being said, For someone to get into it while the buggy tires work, they need all of the wide stuff/ long shocks/ bigger wings to be fast. And then a month later they change to foam tires, you have to get rid of all that stuff, and go back to narrow arms, short shocks, and the smaller wings. The 2 different forms of racing are totally different in setup. I think a decision needs to be made before hand to keep cost down for someone getting into it fresh for smac track.

I'd like the track to run foams, I'm willing to put out extra time and money to run some foams as i've never ran them.

Also to add to the above about the differences. The buggy tire stuff isn't really cheap either, its not just arms and shocks. Arms, turnbuckles, shock towers, shocks, wings (top and nose) Different wheels, and rear dog bones are all needed to make a car fast and easy to drive on a loose track.

Thanks for all the info.

In case anyone is confused, because Scott's track in indoors, it will be a HARD PACKED surface...there's no chance of it being 'loose dirt'. That being said, I don't expect that the setup differences between a high bite/smooth track setup for rubber tire or foam tires will be drastically different.

I've talked to Scott about coming up with something slightly more definitive in terms of the tire rules.......stay tuned.......

Here is a newbie's perspective. I have never raced Dirt Oval before and am converting a Losi XXX Kinwald into a Late Model using a Speedy's Racing conversion kit. I don't have a ton of time or money to spend on the hobby, but am ready to move beyond a spec class option. In all of the forums, it seems that this foam/rubber tire issue burns slowly and never quite goes out.

From my experience, and maybe it is the different race styles, you can go out on an off-road track with a set of tires or two and still have a good time trying to beat your own personal best time and become a better driver (in most of the classes). if you are respectful and have decent driving skills, you can accomplish this without upsetting the better drivers (or at least not upsetting them frequently). It sounds like with dirt oval, there is so much more relevance to the tire maintenance and tweaking that I am already intimidated. The last thing I want to do is get a bunch of guys angry at me because I am pulling slow laps due to not having special tires or not maintaining them properly. I am now confused as to whether my conversion plan will even work if I need foam...it sounds like you need a touring car.

This is just an observation from someone that has spent a lot of time trying to gather information on Dirt Oval. I am not, nor will be one of those guys that complains or threatens not to race at SmacTrac (it would be a meager threat at best anyway); that is not my style nor my point. I am just beginning to think that this Dirt Oval thing is much more complicated than I thought (and I definitely did not think it was just turning left).

That being said, everyone is very supportive and encouraging at the track, so I feel that if I can get over the initial learning curve, I might be able to actually post some real smac talk. :D

Paco62,

Your converted XXX (I presume this is a 2WD buggy) will be a perfect fit for the DODC 17.5. 13.5 or open Mod classes (you could use a latemodel or EDM body). The touring car would end up in the 4WD class...so you don't NEED one unless you want to run that class as well.

Don't be intimidated.....this isn't as complicated as everyone is making it seem. We'll know more once we get some actual laps on the track but the tire situation (especially if we're talking foam) is AT LEAST as simple as what you deal with now running offroad.

Glad to hear that you're planning on coming out. Props for finding that conversion kit from Speedy's. You might want to start your own thread (here in the Smac Trac forum) to clue some of the other guys in on where you got your conversion parts, etc.

It is a 2WD. I appreciate the support. I am sure it will be fine, just seems like an awful lot of information. SmacTrac really does a good job of ensuring all levels of racer are comfortable. That is part of the reason I am trying Dirt Oval.

That is a good idea. I will try and get my information together and setup a thread for conversion questions this weekend. Any help you guys needs at the track, let me know. I will be happy to chip in.

Any of your old codgers wanna come out out and sniff nitro fumes on Sundays? I think the 1/8th late model class is going to be a ton of fun. The cars are cheap (Ofna for around 280-300 bucks), bullet proof (have you ever seen an offroad buggy tumble?), the engines aren't all that critical(again CHEAP)....and they make NOISE!!!!

Ok Steve, if Eddie can bring out the T-Rex, then I'm bring out my dino too. It may be a Raptor or it could end up running like a Bronto.

Watch out in the Open EDM class.

Hey T-Mac don't forget to bring one of your brush mods with you. Well maybe 2 or 3. My motor that was in the car actually blew up in my face.

Right on!!! I have a hunch your dinosaur will get around just fine, Mike. :)

We only count that stuff when the Cardinals are over .500 on natural turf and the moon is full. There also must be at least 1 'Rush' song playing in the backround at some point during the specified 240 second period. :)

Hey....Ed....I never asked what compound tires you were using last night. Are you sold on the Magic 'IT' Truespeed tire sauce or do you plan to experiment a bit more? So far, that stuff seems easiest way to go to me.

Todd told me that he doesn't normally use his 'Pink' and 'Red' sauces on the BSR type silver as the foam is fairly closed cell and it doesn't soak in like he wants. You're welcome to try mine before you buy some if you like...I have both.

He did suggest it for all the other compounds, however (RC4Less silver, pink etc and all the other BSR compounds).

Yep...racing this Sunday....

FYI, not sure if you have anything 'flashlight powered' but we've not had anyone running nitro sutff. Nick (A+ Bodies) ran some practive laps with his 1/8 LM our first Sunday but he was the only one with nitro (Eugene had some new cars with him...I don't think they were finished yet) and no one has brought one back since. We did count Steve's main into the track records because we ran a staggerd start just like in qualifying. That 4.2 for a fast lap in the main results is an actual lap time and not the quick first lap that you see in most mains! In fact it is only one of the many 4.2's that he turned including 9 of them in a row!!

Steve apparently did not enjoy losing last time out, because he definately stepped up his game!! Apparently when you are that fast you also need alot more room to fit your car into turn one! ;)

We have not talked about fast lap at all,It was how many laps turned in the main. I was referring to the IFMAR start in the mains,Not fast lap.

I brought up fast laps to show how fast Steve went. That part had nothing to do with your post.

For the EDM main Wed night we ran a staggerd start which means that we ran the main exactly how qualifying is run. The tone went off and when we each crossed the line we each went onto our own individual clock.

It is true that track records only count in qualifying because the staggerd start is used. Since we used the staggerd start just like qualifying, I allowed it to count toward the track record.

Smac experimented with some Custom Works 'street trac' tires. They were pretty bad until he ground the tread off...then they ran like all the other slicks...STUCK LIKE CHUCK.

Matt Morton managed to turn a 4.9 second lap in practice using them on his 'wide' outdoor sprinter, but had a problem with the car that sidelined it for the night before he could race it.

Jim Aumann won the first (and only) open 4WD LM race with a touring car on TC rubber tires.

Just giving some examples to show that it's not been 'all foams'.

Ed's still got the Dom...at least as of last week. He ran that red beast in practice some. Smac just finished turning his old X-ray FK-05 into a LM....I think he's planning on racing it tonight. Yea, Matt made me buy one for this last winter, so I'm gonna make him race his.

The Losi is a great little car, abit loose & wobbley in the fittment of the suspension, but it doesn't seem to matter much. There are many cheap, easy upgrades that make the car much more enjoyable, (threaded shocks, better center link for steering, JR digital steering servo, Mamba 4200kv brushless system... spec system per rules package, etc.)

No real trick setup. I run mine with a lot of spring shims in the rear and add shims to the front to get what you need, more or less steering. If you can, run the car on some concrete or asphalt to wear the tires down. Less tread makes for more traction.

P.S. Don't let Doug know the setup secrets.:D

Ha! Too late Mike your the one who told me how to setup my car in the first place! The other night my car was absolutely terrible and I found out why, I lost rear shock oil in both shocks and both sides were so soft that even looking at it wrong caused the suspension to squat.

But i was kinda in a hurry, So thanks to Ron Roy for getting those trued and grooved for me. The car will be better next time, i got a few more things i wanna try on it before next weekend.

OK, i just came up and watched for a little while. It's getting my blood boiling again for some R/C :tire:. (nice to meet you Doug). if i pick that mini for sale at the track, i'll need a trasmitter, what is a nice one to get but not spend a fortune on ? i'm gonna have to talk my wife into this (me disappearing and spending more money; maybe i'll trade the aquarium in the dining room for some R/C :ha:).

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who helped me out at the track toonight. Im still very new to all this stuff (my first time at smac, and only my 2nd night ever driving an rc car)and learning how to set the cars up and all that so the info all you guys gave me tonight helped...but there is still a ton of room for improvement on my part for sure!:ha: Mike thanks alot for running home to get me the suspension part i needed..without that my 1:45 minute drive to get there would have ended with about 20 laps in a heat! You were a lifesaver and alot of help! Doug as always you helped a ton...thanks for the input, and hopefully i stayed out of both of your way as good as I could. Hope to see you guys wednesday!

I think the track was int he best shape ever last night! Traction was not a problem at all (it usually isn't anyway) but it was real good last night. So good, in fact, my DD sprint with a 7.5 Tekin Redline as pulling wheelies 5-6 foot out of the corners. Hooked up. If you are thinking about making the trip, tell a friend, load the truck and come down sometime, this place is awesome.

I wanna say good job to Kevin Klyber for qualifing 3rd and winning the deal. His outlaw car is about as good on foams as it is on outdoor rubber tires.

Building my EDM today and tomorrow. Will try to have it ready by wednesday but if not, get ready for next sunday, should be fun.

Still can't believe my sprint went 4.686 fast lap. Just a week ago 4.81 and 4.77 were as fast as I thought the track was gonna be......wrong again. I hope to have the sprinter figured out soon, it's only the second time running this car.

I hope to see ya all again Sunday.

ER,

It doesn't sound like you're hurting for power but.....how much hotter could you go and still be able to fit a gear on it? Aren't the DD cars harder to deal with in modified?

Good run by the way! I heard you almost went 51.

I think I can run a 5.5 with a 9-10 pinion and a 96-99 spur. Or I can do 64pitch with a 15/128 or so. I can definately gear a 5.5.......that is what I ran in mod sprint @ the Open Wheel (21/128) so I think running a 5.5 or 6.5 is enough and doable.

Thanks for the thought Eugene, I appreciate it. As for number one son Scott, watch it buddy I may not be able to ground you any more but I am the guy usually anouncing your race and handling the computer. I am told there is a way to make laps disappear!!!

As a matter of fact, however, the '37 Ford Vintage stock car I am running in the local dirt track circuit does have decals declaring a sponsorship from AARP Racing. Will have the car out for it's first trial run on Friday night June 5th at Belclair Raceway in Belleville.

If I can get my r/c pit crew to supply me with a setup for the car that he has modified for me, maybe I can figure out how to drive it without looking like the old man that I am. I havin't given up yet, I think old guys can still compete.

Tough day at the track today. Light crowd and the traction dropped off more than usual. Most of our race days lately have taken place on rainy or humid days, which has really had a positive effect on traction. Today it was more difficult to keep the moisture in the track as the day went on. With that being said, most of us are not supprised to hear that none of the track records were broken today.

The suprising thing is what you will not see in the results this week. After spending most of the season breaking his own track record in modified sprint Eugene Ryder lost his record on Wed night to Matt Morton when Eugene took the night off. Before racing started today, I told Eugene that the track was drying out too fast and that it did not look like any track records would fall.
What I learned today is to not underestimate Eugene!! In each of the first two rounds while everyone else was struggling with less traction and slower cars, Eugene was on pace to be the first sprint driver to break into the 51 lap barrier including a 51 @ 4:01 late in the 1st qualifier before getting caught up in traffic. He also shattered his own fastest lap on the track in Sprint with a 4.5 lap. Matt Morton currently is the only other driver to break into the 4.6's!

I can't wait to get these guys on the track at the same time and see some real battles!!

Records were broken today right? fastest sprinter to date was a 4.686 now its 4.56. This wednesday should be better than today.......Im sure of that, but I wont get to find out. Seems to be this lil dirt race on pay per view that night with some not so bad of drivers running not so slow LM's at a not so popular track in this lil town known as Eldora.

Wish there were more people coming out......I don't know where everyone is.......must be tired from racing saturday night......right Kelm? LOL

I wanna say thanks to Tekin for an awesome speed control/motor combo......who would have thought a 7.5 would run 4.5 sec laps in a sprinter. Hard to believe a 20yr old DD car is still competitive......best $75 I ever spent.

Thanks for another good time.....talk to you all later

In all seriousness, that sucks Mike. I poked around today on the interwebs but I didn't find any for sale around this area.

Sorry if I worded that wrong but I don't actually have a personal transponder for sale. My last comment was supposed to be a joke about me swiping Mike's. I've had several pm's tonight asking how much my PT was so I figured I'd just post to clear that up! My bad!

I am thinking about joining dirt oval by making my B4 Factory Team Kit into a MDM. Steve at Checkered Flag said that if I was going to get into it, I would have to talk to someone by the name of "Mouse" and call him to get a body made. If you have any setup tips for a MDM, let me know.

low81ryder is Mouse's login name. He can hook you up with mdm bodies. PM low81ryder to get ahold of him.

Good luck tonight guys...wish i could be out there having some fun! vacation is over and back to work now on weeknights....if you guys run on a sunday or I get a day off during the week ill try to make it out again...the new loose dirt is fun, and fast! :checkeredflag:

mjpstl...the MDM class is fun! Its not hard to switch over to Dirt Oval...Doug can vouch for that...he took his car from being set up for off road and just changed the springs and was the fastest car on the track last week!

When I went Wednesday to Checkered Flag, Steve said that when you run MDM, most people run Double Dee's rear and Rounders front. Would it be ok if I ran Rounders front and Hole-Shot rear? Also, is there anyway through here to get a contact of low81ryder?

I run Hole Shots on the rear and rounders on the front, and my car is getting close to the track record so I think you'll be fine.

Come on Doug, it's just an anniversary. How many years? You have to get your priorities in order.

1) Bring her racing with you, it's that bonding thing.
2)Play some nice music on the ride to the track.
3)Get her some of her own wrenches to help you work on the car.
4)Have to share an order of wings from Shirley's.
5)Make sure you both stand at the end of the track so you get lots of dirt in your hair.
6)Now you have to shower when you get home, so she washes your hair and you wash hers.
7)Crap, I forgot what I'd do next when I was your age. At my age, now we would go to bed and SLEEP.
