GREAT race - lots of fun and thanks to all who organized and sponsored the race!
Scotty Earnst is the BEST!
AND, I pretty much feel like the Losi folks (WITHOUT any help from me!!!) pretty much served notice that theh L8ight model is the car to BEAT! AND, several of those cars in the A were cars just like mine - where the box was opened, the electronics and engine were installed and they went to the race track! This race roller concept is getting MUCH better - and pretty RACY!
I'm markin' this one on my calendar for next year!

I took video of the LM A-Feature and will try to get it uploaded tomorrow. I agree that this event was fun to be a part of. Look forward to it next year, maybe we can get a day trimmed off of it so more racers are able to be a part of the full event.
Good job to Hoover/Butts for putting on the event, the Howard & Greg for providing the humor during tech, the track crew for providing a good track and Scottie for calling some great racers.

I am primarly an on-road racer but I was very impressed with this event. The 8th scale cars were awsome to watch and I may have to give that a try myself.
Thanks to all that put up with my silly questions and took the time to explain.
Congratulations to Doug Gaunt.:checkeredflag:

Chris,
Are we going to be able to see any of the pictures you were taking???
Yes you will! The way (at least the way I....) pictures need to be posted, it will take a bit but I'll have some up here for SURE!
AND, congratulations to all of the WINNERS - who were certainly the cream of the crop in each of their respective classes!
AND, a particular thanks to Doug Gaut, Lee Morrisey, Lars Johnson and ALL of the Losi crew for showing me WHICH two adjustments needed to be made to the out of the box L8ight Model! :) The patience of these guys is amazing and they sure helped this 'old guy' along! The Lars Johnson, Gary Kyes, Scott Butts and Scotty Ernst cars were out of the box production cars. I *think* Doug Gaut and Lee Morrisey's cars were the development cars that they've been running for quite some time as a part of the evolution of this car from 'good idea' to production reality!
As an interesting side note, I briefly spoke with Lloyd Smith's Dad after the race and he indicated that Lloyd had NOT driven inn any races since last year's Chili Bowl Jr. event! Someone needs to drag this feller to race track more often as he's talented and WHO knows where he could go with a bit more racing?
Another side note - you should pit near Jeff Harper (GREAT dry sense of humor and a VERY smart and interesting person to talk to!) and Steve McCluney (one of the funnier people I have ever raced with)(and who calls a MEAN Baja race!). Another nice young fellow I had the pleasure meeting was Alex Noah and his Dad - VERY nice people who are having fun with these cars and doing well also!
Pitting with Gary Kyes and the Losi bunch was a GREAT experience for me and it's always fun to renew acquaintences with folks you've know for a long time - like Gary who proved that they years have been VERY kind to has racing abilities and he could still wheel with the BEST! AND, speaking of wheel men - how 'bout Scotty Ernst's dirt oval DEBUT???? A Main first time out is AMAZING and certainly is a MAJOR accomplishment!
Thanks also go to Sonny Brown and the entire Spektrum crew for their support of this event!
OK, I'll quit rambling and go edit some pictures! :)

Now if say losi sends me a new car I wouldn't object to running nscs and more big shows. LOL. I really enjoyed racing at thebowl with everyone and had a fantastic time. I will make my way Tulsa to run this summer if my old worn out Ofna will make it that long. :D

Llyod, you need to run some of the NSCS and Sooner Nitro Series races this year. There are some fun tracks that we will race at this year. The new track in Joplin is a blast and also Wild Bills down in Texas was fun last year.

But what were the other guys in the A running. I really would like to know just Chassis, Body and motor.

And thanks to everyone who stopped by our graphics booth. Met a lot of new friends.... just had a great time talking to everyone. You all had my vinyl machine SMOKING!!!! Thank you!
Glad everyone liked the shirts... sorry for the delay getting them there. Had a caboos-load of mechanical problems with my equipment. I still have some shirts left over if anyone needs them. And to those that ordered them on the last day, we'll ship them out ASAP!
Hope to have more things on my myspace page soon!!

Man,
Lee had it right up until the end, looks like he got alittle loose and Doug put the bumper to him.
That was Great!!!!
To say this is a hollow victory would be an understatement. My setup was a little off till Friday morning for the 4th round. Lars and I had a great race swapping the lead and positions on the track many times but never touched.
In the main the marshall in turn 1 was blocking my view which is why I didnt see the wreck and ran into Scotty on lap 4. Lee and I ran together all week long and he was always able to pull me a car length or so due to different gearing and setups. When we came out of turn 4 I expected him to pull away and when this did not happen I was too close to react and you can see the result of me trying to dive to the outside. It was all MY mistake! I would never take a racer out for a position let alone a teammate. I felt sick after the race and will never feel right about it.
Thanks to all for the support though. It was a fun week of racing for sure!!

It was an awesome time down there. I think that's the best race event I've been to so far. The people, the racers, the racing was all great. The mains got to be a bit rough at some times but that's racing. It happens. I absolutely can't wait for next year. I learned a ton about driving in the traffic and I hope to do better in the future.
Lee Morrison---HUGE THANK YOU for giving me the correct low speed carb needle. Lee pulled out a needle he had machined himself to get the engines lean enough on the low end to run right. And another huge THANK YOU to Gary Kyes for hooking up the racers with new tuning springs for the 8ights. That was above and beyond for him and Team Losi to get us drivers set up.
All the guys with the Losi crew are just a great group of racers. Easy to talk to. Open with suggestions. Willing to put their hands on your car to tune it. Just awesome. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Congrats Mr. Gaut. You worked hard during that race to get back to the front. I've seen many people pull their cars off the track because of bad luck. But to see you dig down deep and pull through says great things about you as a person. On a weekly basis I see top drivers throw fits and walk off the drivers' stand for less than what happened to you. I'm glad I was there to witness it. Great job buddy.
And the biggest thanks goes to Scotty Ernst and James Hoover. The whole event was bad A**. Like I said, I think this was the best RC event I've ever been to. Two thumbs up in my opinion.
Thanx

Congrats to my friend Doug Gaut, you ran a helluva race. All in all a great week, now we have to back to work.
I hope to see a lot of you at Hutch in 2 weeks.

Doug, everyone knows you are a stand up guy and a clean driver, you did an amazing job to come back for the win! That was Lee's race to win or lose, he did an awesome job but got hit close to the end, you were right there and he was off line and got loose, you didn't.
You should feel great about your win, I'm sure Lee is cool with it.
Congrates to both of you for being great sportsman on and off the track!!

I see it this way, Racing involves alot of things but from the video I saw you had no time to react and so no foul. Great win and a great race. Wish I could have been there.

Couple more questions. Where does Lars race normally? I have never seen his name before, just wondering where he runs.

Lars is from Colorado. His normal fortay is 8th scale off-road. He also travels racing the 1/10 electric off-road truck and buggy. He came to Hutchinson, Ks back in November and tore it up on the indoor off-road track. He is crazy fast with what ever he drives. Funny guy too. And more than willing to dish out info in an honest--non biased--way. He just tells it like it is.

Thanks to Arnie and the CW crew for all the fun and guidance. My Outlaw saw its first track time at this race and is very good right out of the box.
Great seeing Doug G. really get his L8 smok"in around the track>>>>great win buddy.
Watching Lars, Lee, Doug and Jeff work traffic and each other was killer. That Losi car is Bad fast.
Hope everyone made a safe trip home, and see ya next year, if you don't race the IL series.

Thank Hitman but I still wish it had not happened.
Lars is a Team Losi 1/10 & 1/8 "offroad" driver from Colorado. He has never driven dirt oval before and got his L8ight the Saturday before the event. He barely had time to put the electronics and engine in the car before he left for Tulsa. Over the week he did change the ride height as well as a right front spring and a stiffer front swaybar but thats it which speaks tons for the out-of-the-box setup let alone his natural talent.

I would like to thank the following people:
Team Losi. Gary Kyes (RC Legend), Brent Redlin, Lars Johnson, Lee Morrison, Sonny Brown and Jeff Harper. To get to work with such a talented and cooperative group of guys is an honor. To see how many people came by the pits to get anything from setup help to engine tuning advice to just talk with these guys was impressive.
To Chad Butler, Cary Pence, Frank Godel, Mike Garrett, Mike Calvert and Steve McLooney for keeping the pits light hearted and humorous except there is one picture etched into my mind that I could have lived a lifetime and not needed to see. LMAO!!
To Chris Kovachevich for keeping me on my toes and yes you can borrow my scissors anytime. LOL It was nice to see you having a good time on "SPEC" tires!!
To Doug Canham (Canham Graphics) for the fantastic engine decals. They really finished the realism on my Harper sprint.
To Wolfman for his great spirit and great sense of humor. If you ever get the opportunity to pit with this guy do it, he only makes the races that much better.
To James Hoover, Greg Bruner, Howard Judd, Mike Bullock, Scott and Kristina Butts, Rodger Moore, etc for the insight, organization, track prep and unending hours it took to put an event of this size on. GREAT JOB!!!
To Scotty Ernst, no doubt the best r/c announcer and program operator of all time. We are lucky that SPEED has not hired him by now. Scotty is also a great wheel. To see him drive an 1/8 late model for the first time ever and put it into the A main was sweet.
To Jeff Harper for the room and board this past week, setup help on the sprint when I could not find a balance, faith and never ending friendship. You are a CLASS act my friend!!
Great job to my fellow Kansans on their performances. Many of them just started this past year or two but showed they are learning quickly and I look forward to racing with them more this coming year.
Congrats to Frank Deiny on his nitro sprint win. Not sure how much rubber tire experience he has but this just shows the talent and depth of the Custom Works team. The new Outlaw works great too.
Matt "Showtime" Murphy, way to put on a slide clinic. You should have seen the spectators! They probably enjoyed that show more than the racing itself.
Quick note, somebody that really surprised me was Nick Antonovich. He has not raced in the past year but compared to his first attempt on rubber tires last year, this year was a night and day difference. He looked good on the track and just missed the bump into the A main. Good job Nick!
I hope this event happens again next year. It is quickly becoming the US Open Wheel equivilent for rubber tire racing.

Doug, I understand where you are coming from. Heck at our local track there are only 6-8 of us on a bi-monthly basis and here is what happened one weekend. One day during qualifying Donnie Victor aka Shotgun was coming up on me fast coming down the back stretch. I felt really bad when I collected him. I called high and lost control of my car when i did. It ruined his run. I felt really bad about it but we both joke about it now. Its racing and sometimes we cant avoid the unavoidable!
I do understand though. It always sucks to take out a friend and teammate but it happens.
Hitman
Doug,
Someday I hope to be able to race with all of you. I had heard that Donnie was trying to promote an 1/8 scale LM series this coming summer.... I heard rumor he was trying to do like a 5-6 race series. Would be fun to see all the active guys on here.
I would love to meet you, Brad, Lee, Smitty, Stetler, McNutt, Clayton, Sonny and the rest of the great mid west racers.
Maybe someday we can do a big get together at maybe Brads place its kind of in the middle of all the racing. For you guys, the guys at Cherryville, and the folks from Florida.
Wouldnt it be something to get 100 late models together for a shot out?????

Doug Gaut, Thanks for loaning me a clutch and all the help that you have given me over the last year or so. Congrats on the late model win. Looking forward to traveling to many more out of state races with you.
Nick Rank, What a class act you probably cost your self a shot at the main when you let me back by because my car was tight and I backed into you. It was awesome racing with you.
Chris Pearce and Rick Bell, Thanks for letting me ride down with you guys on only a couple days notice. Chris thanks for having the hotel reservations taken care of.

Man I love this race. So much fun R/C racing during the day and then heading over to the big track at night.
On behalf of everyone at Spektrum I would like to thank all the racers for supporting the Chili Bowl JR.:thumbsup::thumbsup:
I want to give BIG thank you to James Hoover and all his hard working volunteers for their efforts in putting this race together. The Chili Bowl JR is quickly becoming one of the premier events on the dirt oval calendar. Having Scotty announce this year was a great addition. He is the best on the mic and keeps the program running super smooth. He also proved that he is a pretty good Late Model wheel as well. Congrats on your A-main run.
To Greg & Howard in tech , and to Scott, Roger and all the track prep guys thank you for all your hard work. Dirt tracks are rarely perfect, especially temporary ones, but I thought over the 4 days you did an awesome job figuring out what worked to make it the best surface for everyone.
Congrats to Nathan and Frank on the sprint wins and Arnie on the TQ’s. It was nice of you to move over and let your team guys grab the glory. BTW: I still have that crisis hot-line number if you need it…LOL Also thanks for the tech support all weekend. For the record No Bueno!!
Dunlap, Showtime, and Allan great hanging out with you guys this weekend. Allen congrats on the very strong runs in sprint and late model A‘s.
To the “Three Stooges” that I pit with LARRY Canham, Rob MOEvaney, and CURLY Dale thanks the hours of pit humor and congrats on the A-main runs. Let us know when the Tulsa Gone Wild episode will air on Channel 15.
Sorry guys I have to brag on my teammates . They are simply the best, and I’m not talking about what they do on the track. They are winners off the track and are always willing to help anyone. Doug, Gary, Lee, Jeff, Scotty, Brent, and Lars thanks for all of your efforts. I’m very lucky to get to work with such great people and talented racers .
Doug BIG congrats on the Late Model victory and the third place run in nitro sprint. It was nice to see “The Wizard” rewarded for all the hard work that he puts in. :trophy:
Chris K thanks for racing with us. I though you did pretty well for a rookie. Look forward to seeing the coverage in R/C Driver soon.
It’s been a long week and I’m tired but I can’t wait to do it all over again next year. :checkeredflag:

Thank you Big Bill for your support in helping get the track back to good racing conditions on Thursday.
To Scott and Roger for keeping the prepared everyday, Howard and Greg for the humor over in the tech area.
To Scotty Ernst for keeping the race program going, and you could really see the crowds get in to the racing with his announcing. I think on Friday it looked like over a thousand spectators in their watching, Scotty had all ovf them into the race.

During the week I would be waling throu the pits and see the Losi pit area, and the Custom Works Pit area, helping the other competitors with their cars, even if the cars werent manufactured by the company that they represent.
Especially thank you to all lthe racers that came, if if werent for you all this race wouldnt even be possible.
Hopefully everybody can make it back next year to a bigger and better show.
eh....ehem.......

I had a great time racing. Glad things worked out for me so that I could. Thanks to all that put this show on. This race should be marked on everyones calander each year. I was also glad to see Brad Dyer pull that Harper Chassis off the shelf and run it. Sorry that my brother and I had to put a stop to your run through the alphabet. LOL Hope to see you running that car at some more races this year.

I was glad to see everyone trying to keep things light hearted and not way over serious. Sure made for a fun 3 days of racing and hanging out with friends. I've already put in my vacation request at work for next year's event.

He had a set screw come loose in the center front cvd. No parts failure, just something that did not stay tight.:(

I believe there was only one silver/blue car and that is Lloyd Smith.

Yeah at 3:07 I got really close to Lee,lI put the nose of car in his rear fenders lol, but you can see I hit the brakes and almost got caused my car to get out of the groove doing so. Lee's car did not faulter a bit from that incident. I really try to drive clean and be mindful of what is going on that is what got me to where I was at the bowl.

You did fine. I'm sure his heart skipped a beat, but you did nothing that caused him to lose any ground or let Doug catch him. It was a different incident that caused that.

I gotta throw out another Huge thanx to Mr. Lars Johnson for all the 10th scale tires he kept piling into my pit box. That was awesome. Even if they were a year or two old, they're in great shape. I just gotta order like 50 sets of wheels now.
thanx man

Are you talking about the blue car that spun out by himself right behind the silver/blue car at the 3:09 mark?
Looks like the blue car either hit him and spun or checked up and spun, hard to tell in the vid. But the silver car was in front of him???
