Signup sheets are on the web site I would ask if it is possible to sign up online it would be much more efficient and safer as data is directly imported instead of me tying it in.
This year we will allow the addition of the Novak 13.5 motor along with the DODC spec motor which should be available shortly. I would strongly encourage those of you who do not have a Novak motor to buy the DODC motor as it will be the only motor to be run next year at most of the large venues and series.
The wingless nitro sprint car class at the Fall Sprint Car Nationals produced some of the best racing of the year so I felt compelled to add it to this years lineup. (you can all yell at me Sunday night when we would have been done had I not added this class)
I would really like to thank the sponsors for this years event as they are some of the best companies in the industry and with them on board it should prove to be a great 2009 Freeze.
This should be the best freeze ever, with even more parking and a smoother reconfigured track which has lead to some of the best racing I have ever seen. I simply can't wait till everyone gets here.

I don't know much about electric motors, but it may be legal in the mod classes if it meets ROAR specs.

Yes the Spec Motors from the USOWC are legal for the Freeze in the 13.5 classes. The motors have had some problems but if you have a good one, BE HAPPY.

I figured someone would screw up with lightened flywheels and clutch housings. And a carbon fibre flywheel at 30000rpm could be some problem after some time.
FossilRC
February 11th, 2009, 9:50 AM
I think alot of the problem with the flywheels is that some are just drilling holes with no concern about balancing. No way can backyard machine work be precise. The flywheels that are on the market are just fine, if we just keep it real and quit always looking for that edge.:checkeredflag:

The reason this was done is for safety. Not only does this eliminate a carbon flywheel it also eliminates a stock flywheel thinned to the point it is a rotating razor blade. From my business standpoint, it would be possible for someone to cut there finger to the bone and then me be liable because of it. This just eliminated the possibility of that happening.

If it looks like swiss cheese then forget it.......if they take a set of calipers and it is way narrower than a stock one then forget it. It is pretty obvious when one has been monkeyed with.

Siggy, u hit it right on the head (a properly made one) is safe. I don't blame Chris for this call, it is one way he keeps his racers safe and his buisness from being from being slapped with a lawsuit. And u know if a flywheel is thin it will cut a finger real quick when a racer sticks his finger in to shut if down.:tire:

I have been running carbon fiber flywheels and haven't had any issues at all......open or limited. The ones I have are from Leake Racing Engines and according to Jack have been balance tested at 64K RPM for 10hrs with no issues. Its just a shame that when a when someone comes up with a trick product it is outlawed then everyones money has been wasted. As far a safety is concerned....I saw more cars get airborne and hit corner marshalls last year than hurt fingers from flywheels.:twocents:

I applaud Chris for taking the stand.I hope every other track supports Chris and adopts the same policy. I am not one to tell a man he can't be creative with ideas. But these kinds of things are why spec racing leaves bad tastes in the mouths of a lot of people.Your average Joe Shmoe racer dont have access to,or the resources to buy a machinist or carbon fiber fabrication shop, to do these things. Hence the support of commercially available pieces gives equal access to all.Safety has to be our first concern,We all accept a certain amount of risk,But why tempt fate by reengineering pieces?Spend the same amount of time and money working on the setup and practice you can gain the same advantage.

To whom it may concern,
As for the Carbon Fiber flywheels.......a lot of time and R&D went into those flywheels I myself have run them for many years I ran 1 on my sprint car at the 2007 Open Wheel race had no issues and also A very prominent CW driver ran 1 on his sprint car ....with no issues and I have tested these flywheels @64K rpm for 10 hours and have checked the balance 3 times during that 10hrs with 0 imbalance these are the truest flywheels I have ever mounted on an engine.......As for commercial availability ......I have sold 115 as of last Monday..........And these flywheels are available to the public have been since 2 weeks before the 2008 CWOW race.....the flywheels are made from the absolute best Quasy Isotrophic carbon fibre available to man......it is strong enough for the US Goverment they use it for there TOP SECRET aircraft it should be good enough for R/C car racing .....It took a lot of trial and error manufacturing these flywheels .
Also there were on 3 of the top 4 cars in the A main at C&S raceway for the CWOW race in December.....1st,2nd,and 4th.
As for reliability............I have yet to see 1 give any problems ...I wouldn't have spent the time and money to make these if I thought there would be any problems ..they are guaranteed against failure ........
I've had a lot of phone calls today as well as PM's I hate to see politics play a roll in the running of products.....but I am working on something bigger and better ...LOL ....and you can count on that .....hope to see you at the Freeze ...........:tire::tire::tire::tire::tire::tire:
Jack:checkeredflag:
Just wanted to make everyone aware that these flywheels are available to the public and are just a phone call away....and IF ANYONE WANTS TO DISCUSS the flywheel I am only a phone call away .....336-871-8450

from the sounds of things there is no problem with the quality boughten ones. this rule is to keep people from hacking there flywheels and making them dangerous. if they are allowed then there will be people making their own. that is where the danger comes in. kinda like guns don't kill people , people kill people.

I have one of Jack Leakes RC10 GT oval conversions for my gas truck and one of his engines. He made it a point to let me know anything he makes is available to anyone.I support Chris's decision from a tech standpoint,in that it is hard to draw the line on "personal" modification of stock or aftermarket parts.

What is the cost difference between the Carbon Flywheel and a stock aluminum one?
If 3 of the top 4 cars were running them, it sounds to me like the cost of being competitive on a "National Level" just went up. (Assuming they remain legal for the OPEN WHEEL race).
I applaud Jack for his innovation, but at the same time, I applaud Chris for helping keep the cost down.
As for safety, IMO, I don't think the carbon flywheel is more dangerous than the stock flywheel.

Here is my two cents. If the rules at a track state that you must run a stock flywheel, then you must run a stock production flywheel(Losi, Assc, Traxxas, ETC.). If you don't want to, go to another track that does. I think Chris made a great decision and putting safety first to the racers.

February 12th, 2009, 8:25 AM
I think what Chris has done is a good thing as some folks may be doing their own flywheels. If it is a properly manufactured flywheel, whether it be carbon fibre or aluminum, it should be fine. Flywheels that have been drilled should not be used. Leake and some of the other manufactures should do some advertising here on DODC so the parts are more available to all racers. It really isn't that expensive.
The major problem here is that this rule change should have been changed a month ago. Not less than two weeks before the race.
rj14
February 12th, 2009, 9:19 AM
Whatever the rule is, whenever it was made, it is done. everyone is in the same boat. I doubt everyone who has a carbon fiber or alum. flywheel doesn't have a stock one or can't afford one.
Jack, at any point while spinning or balancing your flywheel have you ever applied a lateral load on it to see what it would take to break it? Have you done a hardness test? You would be amazed at what things can break while being laterally loaded while being spun at a high speed. You should know that. Any machienist knows this.
If you have an aluminum flywheel that has been drilled and balanced, what happens when the car bounces on top of a board? Some tracks use spikes to place thier boards. Well if a car lands on one just right, it will break it. I have seen and had funny marks and gouges on my flywheels from the sides that had they been drilled I am sure it would have broken.

Why is it that when the small guy makes a change everyone is up in arms, but when the major organizations make a last minute rule, its all just great and for the good of the hobby, and everyone supports it? Lets get real people, it is Chris's track and his rules, abide buy them or go elsewhere, support him like u would support the big dogs and it will all be good. Hey Jason, I didn't make the quote about the rule change, I was quoting it. I would support the rule change if it was made the day before the race started. Someone has to make a change and it seems that (Chris) was the only one to step up to the plate. Im not sure the 4 minute sessions are a problem, but how many rounds of that do you expect to have. If you get 3 or 4 4 minute sessions than that shouldnt be a big issue I wouldnt think.

Would 3 minute sessions work better? Might get an extra round in that way. When I watched the OW webcast, it seemed like there wasn't a whole lot going on during the last minute of each session.
If you have an ill-handling car, most of the time you need a tire or spring change to correct it which is difficult to do in 4 minutes. You are pretty much limited to pre-load, radio, and wing/spoiler adjustments during each session.

i know open practice are thursday....but won't be there till friday(gotta work sometimes!)...
i'd like to have a clear answer to my ?....like rob said...will we have time to have more than 4 min of practice before my 1st qualifier!...if there's practice from 9am to 2h30pm...why not havin controlled...class limited......ALOT more usefull than heat classified practice...

Eric when are you coming in?
Your question is difficult to answer
because many people have signed up and did not provide transponder numbers
This will all need to be fixed prior to heat number one.
That is the reason I need to run practice by heats.
Nothing is set in stone
but as of now there will be open practice in the AM
and a separate practice session on Friday that will last 3 minutes by heats.

Eric,
To expand on what said Chris said he means open pracitce (controled by class) in the am on Friday. So you should have some wheel time before the timed practice runs per heat.
