View Full Version : JRC Direct Drive Units
Mike Jeffery
December 8th, 2008, 7:54 PM
We just finished manufacturing the first batch of the new JRC direct Drive units. They will be on sale at the Open Wheel race in NC this week. As for the customers that pre ordered them feel free to give me a call as I won't be able to answer your emails. Here are some of the long awaited pictures. These are a direct bolt on kit w/ some very minor modifications such as:
(1) - You will need to drill (1) #33 hole in the chassis plate
(2) - You will need to drill out your Rear A-Arm mounts w/ a #33 drill
(3) - You will need to cut a small slot in the chassis for the Spur gear
That is all that needs to be done. If you want to switch back to a transmission these mods. will not intfere w/ that change(so you can swap back and forth w/ out any problems).
Thanks,
Mike Jeffery

Nice looking piece mike. I ran a direct drive terminator and made the b-main in mod at the next to last USOWC when it was at Coopers, Mine was scratch built with some extra graphite, but your unit looks top noth and should be very good for those looking to loose some weight where it counts the most, in the drivetrain.....

Yes, I did & I must tell ya it is a very impressive unit. I was one of the only ones on a 42 lap pace in the first round w/it & was taken out by a back marker going down the backstraight. Should of been TQ but hey thats the way things go. Anyone buyin this unit from Mike "WILL NOT" be disappointed ! GO FAST TURN LEFT ! Keith Steinle. TQ would of been in 13.5 Sprint since no one went faster than 41 4:01 I believe.

So what kinds of classes will these be legal for? I recall that the DODC EDM rules will only allow a gearbox transmission. So then it is only good for MOD or for tracks that have no tranny rule for EDMs? Am I missing something?

Thats false they are legal for all electric classes per the DODC rules

That is correct Lauden. The DD unit has "NEVER" been illegal for "ANY" electric class. People just got away from them because manufacturers weren't including them in their kits, since the gearbox became just as fast. I personally believe w/the technology of the motors & batteries today that DD will be making a comeback. Less drag & friction on the drivetrain ,therefore, if setup is right ,you should be able to p/u a 1/10 or 2 ! Keep in mind DD is "NOT" for everyone, but Mike @ JRC has made a very nice unit that can be easily changed from gearbox to DD & back again if not satisfied. Just food for thought gentelman ! GO FAST TURN LEFT ! Keith Steinle

Keith - why do you say that DD is not for everyone?
jeff@vinyltrix
December 31st, 2008, 5:40 PM
All 2WD Classes: All entries must be 2wd and rear wheel drive only. For turn marshal safety all cars must have a front bumper that is made of a shock absorbing material e.g. nylon, delrin, plastic, kydex etc. Front bumpers must be mounted in such a way that they will contact an object prior to any other portion of the car in a front impact. All cars must have 4-wheel independent suspension. No straight axle cars allowed, single speed transmissions only.
PER DODC RULES.

Keith - why do you say that DD is not for everyone?
DD drives different than a gearbox. Going in & coming off the turns. Especially coming off. Requires different setup w/ oils & or springs. I know some people that it just doesn't fit there style of driving. Some of the racers nowadays have never seen , let alone driven a DD. Thats just my opinion. HAPPY NEW YEAR ! Keith S.
jeff@vinyltrix
January 1st, 2009, 9:57 AM
i only quoted what the rules stated. but if you really wanted to get technical about it they are not the same. DD is just that direct drive pinion to spur. A transmission (gearbox) has 2 more gears . top shaft and idler. totally different. but my outlook on it if it was allowed to run at the open wheel must mean it makes dirtoval.com specs and rules its allowed.

Jeff, you are correct that the rules state a single speed trans., but no where in the rules does it say that you can not run a DD. DD uses a differential & pinion which still makes it one speed. Sometimes people read only what's in the rules & don't think about what's not ! Just some food for thought, but before I ran the DD unit in my sprinter @ the OW race I called Rob & confirmed that it was legal. GO FAST TURN LEFT ! Keith Steinle HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE !

1. All entries must be 2wd / rear wheel drive only. All cars must have a gearbox with a minimum of 3 gear reductions, including the spur and pinion.

That very well could be, but that doesn't mean that's a bad thing. Why is it when something new comes out its all about cost & not the competitive advantage it could bring. FYI, in 25yrs of racing I have gone through more spurs & rebuilds w/a gearbox than I have w/a DD. Don't get me wrong, I run both & have seen gearbox evolve over the years. I guess it's just a prefference to what you want to use. I think Mike Jeffery has machined an "AWESOME" unit to bring back DD @ an affordable cost. Again this is just my 2cents. GO FAST TURN LEFT ! In my opinion, & experence, if you use a good diff grease it should last quite a few races. Of cource the diff balls play an important roll in the life of a good diff. Ceramic balls are the best to use & will give you more races before having to rebuild. I have gone 6-8 races w/out a rebuild. Exception would be if your running mod motors, which are harder on diffs, then you might have to rebuild every 4-6 races. Hope this helps. GO FAST TURN LEFT ! Keith S.

Here is a clear shot of the JRC Direct Drive conversion with the top plate configured for sprint cars. Had to pull down my first pictures. Had too small of a pinion. With too small of a pinion the motor will hit the LR Arm and limit the uptravel on the arm. I'll repost pictures tomorrow. Have a 128 x 35 on mine now and the left rear arm has 0.600" up-travel clearance which should be plenty for most smooth tracks.

Switching from a GB to DD usually tightens the car up due to less rear weight and mass.
i would think that the weight differnece would be minimal between the gb and dd. the most dramatic part is moving the motor from the center of the car over to the left rear, that is why they are usually tighter.

If it is a mid drive car all your doing is moving the motor more to the left. It will give more left side balance. From what I have seen the DD is most likely about the same weight as a GB. And if is lighter you will have to add weight to be legal.

Yes, at the Freeze this year we had to add just over 4 oz. to make up the difference of the DD unit versus the Transmission. Also the DD unit gives the car more Static left side weight due to the motor position, this should work very well on tracks that have a loose off the turns condition.

The JRC Direct Drive sprinter unit won another race at Mize's RC Speedway in Blythe, GA. TQ in round 3 with a very loose car and won the main with a new track record for 13.5 Sprint Cars, barely taking a second off the old record and just edging CJ Mize for a close win. The car had two missing teeth on the spur gear from the 2 min mark on. Sounded awful but still finished. The combination of the direct drive and Kipps wing had me adding an ounce and half to make weight.
If your ever in east GA (near Augusta) check out this track! 190' of super smooth GA red clay.

Great job Bruce another track record falls to the way side, the JRC Direct Drive System has been Breaking track record all over the place, thanks to all the drivers who have purchased and installed them in their DO cars. We are going to try them on carpet this weekend.
Thanks,
Mike
