I wouldn't think so, but am I the only one that thinks 9 classes for a race starting at 6 o'clock is a bit much? I know there were some people hoping to go and be home that night but i dont think thats gonna be possible, especially for the guys from western NY.

Starting times are a tough decision that can't please everyone.

First, although there are 9 potential classes, I doubt all will be populated enough to run, but the offer is there.

Noon starts mean being at the track by 9am so you can maybe have two pack worth of practice, so you’re on the road at 5am, or choose to spend a night nearby. Then, there's the issue of track conditions in the heat of the day, when most racers strongly express a desire for a tackier surface, which can only be had in the shade or after dark.

The evening start offer the beneficial track conditions, a later start to the morning; and if far enough away that an overnight would have been used, its after the race rather than the night before.

I know it doesn't work for everyone, but the track had chosen to sway to the side of the better surface conditions for this event.

At the CDRC Racers club, with Kirt Coonradt at the helm as our race director, we can run 3 rounds, (2 rounds of heats and a round of mains) with 60+/- racers, in 3.5 hours on a weekly basis - week in and week out. With the addition of the Nitro classes, it will add a bit of time due to the warmup sessions, but the majority of the classes being electric, it won't a big increase in time at all.

The highest WDRA turnout so far this season was 85. If we have that many, it only equates to 4 more heats-that's 20 minutes per round, or an hour onto the show. We can be done by 11:30-12:00 with the cooperation of the racers.

If you haven't attended a show run by Kirt/CDRC Racers club, you are in for a treat. He moves the show along, so be ready!

Also, if you start in the day and end up at dusk/night, dirt tracks change so much that it equates to the first round(s) being a throw away. If you start in the early morning and run the entire program during the day, that still means-out-of towners are driving to the track in the dark during the early morning hours, and racing on a surface that isn't forgiving.

Either scenario for consistent track conditions from start to finish requires either early AM or late PM driving. For better track conditions for all racers, Master Hobbies chose to run it later.

Master Hobbies is one of the nicest dirt oval racing facilities there is - I hope you guys come and enjoy what they have built for all of us racers.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Hope to see you all there!

just a question why offer classes that you don't think racers will show up for? also will there be a minimum of entries for the classes to run? having a 4+ hour ride i would like to know.

i don't mind the late start just the amount of classes scares me.

you gotta be kidding me dylan.

quit trying to start trouble.

I think it would be better to include the classes they think people might show up for than to exclude them from the get-go.

You once agreed to me on this subject, but perhaps your opinion has changed?

June 18th, 2008, 6:58 PM
you must have mistook what i meant i think that there should be more classes. at least 27 sportsman BB and Sb for all classes.

and i'm not trying to start trouble. it is just that 9 classes is alot to start in the evening. again not saying to drop any classes.

I agree I would like to com from western Ny but wonder about time? We all have got spoiled to running big shows and the amount of down time. Most time we are lucky to get a couple of battery runs in practice with any measurable results because of the amount of racers on the track. Back in the Days of old we could run 60 to 80 racers with 3 races each class in about 3 hours. Why all the down time between heats and why do you need any time between rounds? I dont know any one that comes to these races with only one battery. But it seems we always are waiting for someone to charge. If you start at 6 pm you should be able to be complete by 10pm. If you want to have a party after and run a mid-night madness show do it and let the rest of the out towners go home. Dont draw out the program, Lets race not sit around and talk. By the way I like those mid-night madness shows. Run what you brung and hope you brought a enough.

I spoke w/ Kirt, and if we don't have at least 4 cars there will not be a class. I imagine we'll run 6 car heats as well, although I don't want to put words in the race director's mouth.

I mentioned this to Dylan already, but I'd be surprised if the Nitro LM, Nitro Sprint, Truck and Sportsman comprise more than 3 heats.

If they started at noon, the WNY guys would have to leave home somewhere between 4 am and 6 am! Really if you think about it, your "door to door" time is going to be the same, the only difference is when the clock starts.

On a weekly basis we allow only 1 minute between heats, and no breaks between rounds.

The number of classes doesn't affect the time of program- only the number of racers does...
ie: if you run 50 racers in 10 classes, it will take less time than running 80 cars in 5 classes.

Like Wally stated, the door-to door elapsed time is the same, the only difference is what time the clock starts.

For anyone in fear of missing church Sunday morning, I'll be more than glad to volunteer and offer a lovely sermon trackside, with assistance from 'Sweet Brother Solly.' and the Cato R/C Dream World Tabernacle Choir.

Trust me guys, this will be one of the most efficient shows we will ever have the pleasure of attending.

Put it in the books !!!
The first running of the 'Laps Along the Mohawk' at Master Hobbies has concluded in a huge success.

Despite a scary looking bunch of clouds that pounded the nearby village and areas over the river in the early afternoon and continuous radar loops that showed rain cells popping up to the west all night; the mighty vortex produced by the WDRA kept the storm systems away from the Master Hobbies Clay Oval.

Thanks to Mike C., the master mind behind Master Hobbies for the event.
Special thanks to Todd and Jeff for their tireless work to get the surface ready from the heavy rains the days before. (When is the last time you saw a driveway packer at your local dirt track?) But you talk about a smooth surface!

Special thanks to all the racers that despite breaking their curfew traveled to participate in this event; we greatly appreciate your participation.

Thanks to Chrissy and 'Crew' for the good hot food!!

Sorry for the confusion with the main running order, but that was nothing compared to the issues we would have had if the PC with Autoscore had not booted (finally after 2 hours of anxiety)

Congrats to the winners, but remember there are no losers, only those that weren't "lucky' tonight. Where did all the Small Bocks come from...what a great field of cars!!

Thanks to the sprinter for filling your field and with being flexible for your main.

Goody's Headache award(s):
John Schulz; on a bump-up run in the Big Block B when he collects a stopped car in the middle of the back stretch at full sail.

Todd P has the Nitro field covered, thinking about where to spend Dave Louhead's $500 when he's collected in a wreck, pops the right front shock off the ball stud, manages to keep the field a lap or more down until he's collects again in other races mess in turn 2 and before he can get going in the right direction; the team car of Terry Schmitt sweeps by and take the win.

Many thanks to Kipps, Putnam Propulsion, and Mister Hobbies for their generous door prizes.

Up next....the WDRA heads to Joe's Hobby in Lockport NY on July 5th followed by the Big One....The Summer Nationals at Chico's on July 18-20

What an awesome event!

Beautiful weather and blue skies set the stage for the 64 entries to go head to head on the Master Hobbies banked oval.

With practice starting at 2:00, the concern for how the racing surface would hold up quickly passed as the track was able to be kept moist and smooth. This is the only R/C dirt oval track I have ever raced at that has a double drum vibratory roller to smooth and compact the track surface-impressive!!!

Thanks to all who traveled to make this event a success. It was great to see my R/C family and friends-

Special thanks to all of the Putnam Propulsion customers and team guys for their continued support. Your efforts resulted in TQ's in EDM Small Block, EDM Big Block and EDM Nitro, then sweeping all 3 of these classes with A-Main wins as well. :checkeredflag: :trophy:
I will do a more in-depth results write up on our Manufacturer and Product Forum later.

A big thanks and applause to Mike Castelluccio and Todd Moran for an awesome facility, and Chrissy and Charles for the awesome concession stand that kept the tribes fed.

Special Thanks to Wally and Kirt for another well organized / well executed event.
