View Full Version : Putnam Dirt Oval Kits To Be Released

Todd Putnam
October 8th, 2007, 3:12 PM
We are excited to announce that we will be offering both of our cars in various kit forms ("Stages") in the near future. We are offering our kits in various "Stages" to better accommodate our customers, so you will be able to buy exactly what you want, and exactly what you need- in a kit form.

-All of our chassis plates are cut from our Proprietary Putnam "Flex-Tech" Carbon Fiber-This is our own proprietary weave of carbon fiber sheets that we spent over 18 months testing and developing...We do not cut our chassis plates out of generic, standard woven sheets like others do.
Our proprietary layup of our carbon fiber sheets offer a certain degree of torsional flex while still offering increased structural integrity (less flex) front to rear. This is something we have invested a lot of time and money into numerous, ongoing revisions and testing to achieve the best handling, most consistent car available...to offer our customers yet another advantage over the competition.

The various Stages we will be offering our cars are:

-"Stage 1": Proprietary "Flex-Tech" Carbon Fiber chassis conversions that we currently offer

-"Stage 2": Stage 1 kit, PLUS: Proprietary Putnam Propulsion components, (arms, bellcranks, bulkhead(s), front tower, toe blocks, bearings, etc;

-"Stage 3": Stage 2 kit, PLUS: Remainder of components needed for a complete rolling chassis, less transmission

-"Stage 4": Stage 3 kit, PLUS 2.40 Transmission

We will also be offering various upgrades such as Ceramic Bearings, Anodizing, Bodies, etc; as well.

Stay tuned... :revs::checkeredflag:

TP, how long ago did this start? Would my Procar be this or the older carbon? I do like the stage thing, I would consider another one for the right price and option. :D

Kevin,
This is an idea that came about due to the varying demands from customers. Some have ordered complete, turn key cars-others needed a complete roller less transmission, while yet others just needed our aftermarket components and carbon fiber. Full size race cars, go karts, etc; have been sold this way for years-I'm just the first to bring it to R/C.

All of our chassis plates have been cut from our proprietary "Flex Tech" carbon fiber.

I hear ya guys... No one's more excited than I am!

We have the majority of the parts and pieces on order, and are finishing up with some price quotes from the remaining suppliers-to say it has been a logistical nightmare would be an understatement.

As soon as I can get all the components together to assemble one, I will post pics ASAP.

Wait until you see what we've come up with-we're pretty proud of some of our ideas and improvements...

The cars will be available prior to and during the US Open Wheel Champs. We have some really big names on board with the Nitro program already, ranging from R&D, design and driver departments, and I can wait for all of our team's efforts to come together and make our first production Nitro debut at the Open Wheel Champs.

Our new cars coupled with world-renowned nitro guru Shih-hang Lee (aka "The General") modified and tuned Nitro engines has the entire team really pumped about our new Nitro program... :revs:

I know that the RC4Less Foam is totally different from CW, Cooper and BSR foam. I can offer you the following, as we only run BSR tires:

BSR's:

-Silver: R1? Foam Family (Different family of foam than pinks/purples) Soft, usually durometers around 25 +/-

-Pink: R4 Foam Family / Durometers 25-30

-Double Pink: R4 Foam Family / Durometers 30-35

-Purple: R4 Foam Family / Durometers 35-40

-Double Purple: R4 Foam Family / Durometers 40-45

-30's: R3 Foam Family (Higher Rubber Content than R4) / Durometers 30 +/-

Cross Reference:

As of December of '07 @ the USOW Champs:

-CW and Coopers "Pinks" were the same durometer reading and foam family as BSR "Double Pinks"

-I believe CW, Coopers, and BSR Silvers were all the same. CRC Terra Gomme are this foam as well.

silver? and what tire diameter and what pattern?? front 3 or 4 grooves?

-We primarily run BSR Pinks, Silvers or 30's depending on the track and track condition. Very seldom do we run anything harder than a BSR double pink.

-For a starting tire diameter, we run 2.57" - 2.58"

-I start with 5 grooves in both fronts and rears. Also cut cross grooves in rear tires for forward bite.

- All grooves are VERY shallow - maybe 1/16th" max. Just enough to produce an "edge." Too shallow is better than too deep...

-Make all Grooves with a thin Dremel cutoff wheel (#409?)- works well everywhere.

Markny- Here's your answer...(see above) You can use an X-Acto to make the cylindrical grooves in Silvers, as the grooves "open up" quite a bit after you run them a few times. Just remember to keep the grooves as shallow as possible.

Oh, btw- you should receive your BSR Silver rears today or tomorrow.

What width body will we need to run?

What width body will we need to run?

As Todd will tell you that may be a loaded question. If you are planning to run a Putnam Pro-Car or Pro Term in an EDM configuration....Then your choices are only limited by the rules which would be 8" wide. There is no minimum width. You will find that there are advantages to running a body in this config, less than 8" wide for different handling results.

As far as running a latemodel body....you will probably want to look in the 8 7/8" range. Some of these will include- The Rocket by Factory Works, The Tulsa by McAllister (225mm) and I believe the Open Comp Camaro by CW also is at this width. I have seen wider bodies on them as well. If you go wider this will allow more variance as far as location on the chassis.

Todd has usually got a couple of different bodies in stock.

Call him at the shop for more info-

I ran 13.5 LateModel all last year, with the Pro-car. Also, qualified 8th in same class @ '08 USOW with same body. The McAllister Winchester is MY choice. I think it looks the most like a "real LM". It is a "tunnel" style body, that has a seperate top. It gives you an advantage I think on a longer track, also enough side height to work good on rubber tire tracks with longer shocks.
