Clint was that a smallish indoor dirt oval track? If it was, I drove up from Augusta a couple of times and raced there in 1987 or 1988. David Timmerman (East Coast Motors) was the hot shoe there. I ran the first time with foams and got whipped bad, came back the next week with rubber capped tires made by (here is one from the past) SpaceAge Technologies. Did great on them, then after the race the tires were outlawed. Went to Anderson, SC and cleaned house the next weekend with the same rubber capped tires and same house rule was put in effect immediately after the main. NO Rubber capped tires. Went back to Charlotte the next weekend with foams back on my car and got humiliated as everyone there had gone to Silicone tires in the two weeks I was gone. Went back to Anderson, SC the next weekend with you guessed it, Silicone tires and whipped them bad. They didn't outlaw the silicones but by the next weekend everyone at every dirt track in GA & SC was on silicones. I think I was racing a TrackMaster D/O Car back then.

Cecil Collins, Tommy Dunn, Dale Varner, Big John Arrington was the team you had to beat back then. Big John was the ultimate set up man. There were a couple of other guys on their team and between them they won everything in GA & SC for many many months. I bet there was 4 or 6 dirt ovals in a 2 hour driving circle. All foam tire tracks, smooth as silk.

That was FUN!

that was the track. timberman was fast but there were many others also billy dean, david kiser, johhny brite to name a few. yea silicone was fast back them i remember going to a national in va somewhere and all the charlotte boys had those tires and were up front the first day then that night in the motel silicone was all you could smell and all the local hardware stores were out of silicone. i was just a kid back then and with dad running the track did most of my own setup me and my little cousin brandon did pretty good to be 10.
