View Full Version : RC18t diffs

I have been having more problems with my diffs than anything. It seems they are the key to the race and if I am constantly having to rebuild/replace them its hard to keep a good setup. I melt the plastic ones and the titanium one eventually comes loose. And yes I use thread lock.
My question is: Is there any aftermarket diff setups coming out for the RC18? Is the MIP diff worth the money? Are the Delrin gears better than the stock ones? How about the aluminum gears?
Anyone else have these problems?

BTW. My setup is rc18t, full body with side damn, Mamba 8000kv, LiPo, losi step pins, titanium outdrives, and titanium diff outdrives.

The MIP diffs are worth every penny. I have not seen any difference with the delrin gears.
Build them with the MIP diffs, stock gears and carbide balls.
If you are melting the gears, the diffs must be spinning under acceleration. That is not what a diff is for. When you hit the throttle off the line, the diffs cannot slip.
After building the diffs, install in the car. Put the tires on the car. Hold one rear wheel and the spur. You should be able to turn the other tire but with some resistance. Assemble everything and put car on the ground and pull the throttle. If the diffs sllip, tighten diff screw 1/8 turn. Repete until the diff does not slip. It takes a little to tell if the front or rear is slipping with all 4 wheels on the ground. You can also do the final check with just the fronts on the ground then the rears.
Another item is shimming the diffs correctly. The kit gives you 2 shims per side. Make sure the gear mesh in the diff does not have alot of slop in it. Just a very tiny bit of lash is all you need. Your LHS can get you more shims if needed.
Hope this helps.

I dont build them with any slip but after 3-4 minutes of racing it will start slipping. I actually made it through the whole night of racing last night without taking the diffs apart. I was worried cause it acted funny in the last heat.
I heard MIP is coming out with a 1 way diff. That will be sweet.
Here is a video from a couple weeks ago.

I would say the plastic lock nut is stripped. Start with all new parts.

I put new locknuts on it before the races lastnight.

Speaking of diff problems, I just built mine, twice as a matter of fact, and no matter what I do, there is always a little tight spot, a spot where when your turning one half, it is completely smooth except for one little spot where it catches. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong or what I need to use, they have the carbide diff balls in them.
