LOL wow! Atascadero California, only 30 minutes from me. There used to be so many conversion companies out this way, to bad Dirt oval just isnt as big out west as it once was. I remember the big races over in Bakersfield at Haven(i miss the pole barn) when Revtech was next door to them, if you wanted to be fast thats what you had to have! :P

Dit Oval ain't that big nowhere anymore!
We have a real nice oval and can't beg anyone to come race on it.

But, what the heck, we will still have fun when we do get enough cars to run.:skull:

Wow, those pics bring back some memories. The first pic looks like its from the 87 JG race at the Ranch Pit Shop in Pomona, CA. That was the first race I ever travelled to (on a plane). I was TQ and finished second in Sprint Modified to Gil Losi Jr. He was running the first prototype Losi JRX2 with trailing link rear suspension and a bolink sprint body on it. My car was a gold tub RC-10 with the first prototype terminator nose plate on the front of it. Hard to beleive that was almost 20 years ago. Man I'm gettin old!

Thanks for the memories.

My favorite part of those old Championship articles is how they would take all of the cars entered, and line them up around the track, and they seemed to go on forever. THAT was a thing of R/C beauty.

Mod Stock Raceway started there dirt oval in 1982 and run 500 lap non- stop races every fall as there closing event. Those races were scored running 10 cars, by hand with one caller and ribbons tied to there antenna. We had two girls marking down the laps. With a Pit road and many stops the racing lasted over 1 hour and 20 min. The last 500 lap race here was in 2004 and it tool only 55 min and we run a 600 lap event. Times changed and no one runs long distant events here in N.Y. and I do'nt see any dirt ovals even building a pit road any more. seem like with the batterys today we should see many dirt track running long distant races which give the racers more fun for the buck. Maybe even the weekly tracks would be better attended if drivers would get more run time. Most tracks here in NY run 4 min heats and a 4 min feature. 12 min of racing for a avg. of 4 to 5 hours at the track plus travel time. Not much fun for the buck. Maybe none of the racers today know any difference as there are not many racers around Ny that have raced more than 10 years. Sometimes tracks try to run to many classes on the same day. But I am sure all tracks could run a 10 min feature and still get the racers more run time. Most track owners have it very easy scoring today compared to many years ago. Many of the pictures I remember seeing in the rag mags many years ago and it is nice to look back. Keep the pictures coming. In 1983 all cars running the Western NY state 500 all had the Parma Mud Bus (SPIRIT) edm bodies and painted as a real race car running local. It was recorded by a local TV channel and later shown on a TV station even out in Calif. Sportman cars were inports, and Modifieds were American made (RC-!0s) and the sportsman cars run 300 laps non-stop and the Modifieds run 500 laps. All were manuals speed controls with only 540 motors and 1000 mah batteries. Boy how times have changed. But is it more fun today or more work than play?

I grew up on the east side of Orlando and used to love going to Whipporwill. Back when they did the long mains w/ the quick change battery rigs. That was a blast watching them catch a car @ 30 mph on the pit road to do a batt change. I guess that is why I like to watch 60 min touring car mains. Some of the PA tracks do 100 lap truck mains. But I know we will never see a 100 lap edm of sprint main.

Close, Rob...that was the '88 JG which was the last one held at the Ranch. I only remember because '88 was my first JG race, I made the C Main in 4W Mod. In '89 it moved to Racers Haven. And, yes we are all getting old. I actually tried to put on my JG jacket a while back and couldn't even get both arms in it.

Does anyone remember the 4wd conversion for the rc-10 using a speedometer cable to run the small 2 gear box tranny? It was a little weak but worked if you had extra cables on race day. A-Main racing back in the 80s also made a Great Front wheel drive conversion for the rc-10 and I won the NY State 500 lap race with this conversion and the followng year here in NY the North East Drivers Racing Association outlawed the front wheel dr and put it in the 4wd class. END of CLASS. Back I The Days.........

Doug Carter
November 22nd, 2006, 5:18 PM
The 4wd conversion was called a Legend and it was made by MIP. Jay Halsey ran one, among others. They also released conversions with chain and belt drives, eventually. They all go for sick money on eBay now. Hghly collectable. ;)

Doug,

For some reason I could not find and...man if you were here I'd hug you. Those are the cars I grow up with racing against but never had one and now that i am older(not wiser) i would like to have one to run if not put in my collection.

Thank you for the link

Doug Carter
January 5th, 2007, 8:57 PM
Yeah, I sent him an e-mail too, hoping that they are still selling kits. That's an old link and on free hosts like that, sometimes these things can get stale long after the company is gone. I'm crossing my fingers, though. I have some old vintage parts that would go really well in one of those chassis.

does anyone remember the team pit stop chain drive with multiple final gear drive ratios

or the a&l trailing link conversion for the rc10

or the mcallister dirt oval conversion for the rc10

or the brp belt drive tranny

or the rrr adjustable rear camber system

or thir if i could find one of these i would buy it. it was a pit stand that had a raised nylon clamp with a very adjustable head the base was a magnetic metal tray

Had one NIB, and sold it a couple of years ago. I'm kicking myself for it.

or the a&l trailing link conversion for the rc10

Lots of companies had them... A&L, Houge, Andys, MIP, Bullet... none of them very adjustable.

or the mcallister dirt oval conversion for the rc10

Have one on a project I'm working on, as well as a JG lowering kit.

or the brp belt drive tranny

No BRP, but there was the A&L Lethal Weapon, the Trackmaster belt (have one of those), too. The BRP was slick because it had a planetary gear diff in it. Sweet. :)

or the rrr adjustable rear camber system

Have one of those, new. Never liked it... hard to adjust.

Would anyone here be interested in a NIP JG JRX2 Dirt Oval conversion kit? I don't have it personally but I seen it on a shelf at a hobbyshop awhile back. Should of bought it but I plundered through the guys old boxes of stuff and ended up spending over $400.00 so I left it till next time. If anyone wants it let me know and I will call him and have him send it to me.

BTW: great Idea for this forum. I have a few great memories of racing DO in myrtle beach SC but it did'nt last very long. I do think It's really cool to meet some of the guys that I used to read about in the mags. Now I get to race against them.

shoemaker
January 10th, 2007, 5:56 PM
Remember the Hot trick metal motor plate thet held the 3 gear MIP tranny. And the Locker kit to lock the diff on take off?? The kit was comprised of 1/8 copper rods cut 1/8 long to replace the diff balls. When you had it right it would burst you ears on start-up.The slip rings were also made of copper. You had to replace both every 3 or 4 race. But it worked great and eliminated the outside slipper. Both rear wheels would grip the same every time on start-up.MIP also made the first nylon eliminators. This many years before anyone ever throught about using the new kind of slipper elimators used today. Back to the 80s.

Does anyone know? The Big Boys toy sprint conversion, can you add the newer B2 arms and such to the chassis? Or is it strickly older RC10 running gear?

Doug Carter
January 16th, 2007, 4:51 PM
I've never seen any early sprint car conversion (Ascot/BBT) using anything other than original gold-tub RC10 parts, but that doesn't mean that it hasn't been done. Those chassis were drilled for the 6-gear pattern... not even the original Stealth.

Hey Kipp, you like the old skool dirt oval stuff check this out......

Wow! this thread brought back some great memories! (My first post here). I have been out of RC for a bout 10 years (since my Dad passed away).

We traveled the country racing Sprint cars mainly to the East. of KC. Seems like after 94, Dirt Oval died out.

The new Losi Slider grabbed my attn and after further research, there is now a loose dirt oval (outside) in Bonner Springs Ks. and an indoor Dirt in Pleasonton Ks.

Looks like I am gonna have to see if this Ol' Has Been can still turn left.

Doug I see you are from Ill. Are the tracks in Quincy, and Albion still around?

Best regards,

Scott Edwards

although i still have tons of fun, the racing i did in the late 80's and early 90's was incredible! local turnout is down tremendously and now there's only 1 track. there used to be at least 5 tracks within 20 minutes of each other here and each had racers who only raced at their track and some visited most or all of them. back then you could buy rc mags and read about dirt oval races all the time. they had ads for dirt oval mods and pics of chassis. now if you don't own a 1/8 monster truck rc mags aren't worth buying. thank god for the internet and forums like this one! but i still miss those days. thanks for this thread guys! those old ads are awesome... i'm gonna go look at my raborn now haha!

Olderacer where do you race Dirt oval in Delaware?

olderacer
September 4th, 2007, 5:30 PM
sorry, stepped away for a while. there is a small dirt oval in oak orchard delaware, right on the indian river bay, southeast delaware. races are wed nights under the lights. it's a bull ring but banked so speeds are quick for the small size. we're hurting for racers last couple years but we got edm and a rc10 latemodel classes. i got my fingers crossed because a new little clay bullring is under construction outside bethany beach delaware. we are all hoping some new blood gets clay fever!

those chain drive trannies are from awhile back. maybe someone here can give a better idea of what year they were produced. i'd either put them in a shelf queen or put them for sell. in good condition they'd bring a pretty penny.

We used to run at Dave's in Lewes, Delaware for years and We haven't been to Mosley's in a while, maybe a couple of years. Still want to get down there- maybe a I can talk dad into coming down soon.....Been a long time since I ran electric....Does he have his lap counter fixed yet?......Where is this new Dirt Oval in Bethany? When is he going to start racing? What classes is he going to race there?....Thanks a bunch...

Quincy vanished many moons ago, and Albion did, too. The only track in Illinois that is still alive and kicking from the "golden years" is Monee.

hey jeff, been awhile since i've seen you. racing at dave's in lewis was the best. wish it was still open. i never got to go there much and was never very competitive, so you might not remember me. i'm not sure where in bethany this track will be. the owner's name is brian, i don't know his last name. he races electric sprints at seaford so phil and dennis know him. i'm relying on phil for info on the bethany track. i've seen pics. it's a flat bullring. stock motors i'm sure.
mosley's still don't have the lap counter going. they bought some stuff from a seller on this forum, but still haven't figured it out. attendance there is hit or miss. some weeks we only have 4 or 5. some we have 10. most have a rc10 lm and a older edm, so we race both.
phil d. has started coming out when he doen't get off work to late. man he's got quite a long ride. i'd like to get phil, bob and you and your dad out there in a electric edm. just to show me i'm not really that talented after all, haha.
btw scott p. has been wanting you to stop by mosley's so he can buy a radio off you.
hope i see ya,

almost forgot: mosley's in oak orchard will be closed 9-19.

We were all so much younger back then. I remember having to travel with parents to get to the races for quite a few years.

Somebody really should centrally archive all those old articles on a server somewhere. That way, as we get older we can remind ourselves what we did in our younger days.
