Cooper Sweeps Stock & Mod; Hill Gets 3rd Win of ’06 at Bumps & Jumps

The WDRA Super Dirt Series made its first journey to Bumps & Jumps R/C Raceway near Harrisburg, PA for the final event of 2006. Bumps & Jumps proved to be a fabulous facility, and provided some great action.

The highly anticipated battle for the Modified crown never materialized, as Jeff Hotaling’s car suffered mechanical failure just 2 laps into the A-Main. This would all but hand the title to Matt Olmsted, who was now free to "let it all hang out" in an attempt to increase his win total to 4 on the season.

Keystone-state hot shoe Phil Cooper would have other ideas however. After setting the TQ mark, Cooper would move out the lead, with Paul Brauer moving into the runner-up spot on lap 2. After some early trouble, Olmsted was moving through the field and would slip past Brauer on lap 12 for second. Just a few laps later, as Cooper was moving in to lap the field, chaos broke out on the front stretch. When things settled down again, Olmsted resumed second, but Jim Carr would slide past the Brauer machine, which had suffered heavy body damage.

Cooper would move back on to the rear bumper of Olmsted’s car, keeping him in sight and finally managing to lap him with just 3 laps remaining. Carr would hold on to third, with Brauer in 4th, and B-Main winner Brian Strausser rounding out the top 5.

In the Big Block division, it was also the Phil Cooper show, but things were a bit closer. Cooper took off from the pole at the drop of the green, with Steve Tyson and point leader Dan Gill in tow. Cooper slowly pulled away from the field for the entire distance. The only change in position in the entire top 5 occurred near the 20-lap mark as Brain Strausser slipped past Brian Burkhart for fourth. The entire top 5 also finished on the lead lap in a very well driven, but uneventful event.

In the Small Block division, pole sitter Roger Hill had a rough couple of laps at the start allowing EJ French to grab the lead. With French leading comfortably, Brian Clark moved to second, while Hill was starting to move back through the pack.

French’s huge lead would be cut drastically on lap 15 as an attempt to put a lap on Bob Egan resulted in a spin. French retained the lead, but Hill was now within striking distance. Hill would stalk French, slowly reeling him in. Then with just 4 laps remaining in the race, Hill made his move to the inside of turns 1 and 2. The two cars would make heavy contact, but neither driver lost control. Hill would come out on top, while French would have to settle for second. With a third place finish, Sean Leonard would wrap up the Small Block championship. Brian Clark and Bob Egan would round out the top 5.

In non-WDRA sanctioned action, Nick DeAngelis would hold off Keith Jones to take the win in the Nitro Sprint class, while Rodney Bauknecht dominated the Nitro EDM field. Cliff Augst took honors in Nitro Truck, and George Verbonitz TQ’d the Stock Sprint class, but no drivers started the main.

That wraps up the 2006 WDRA Super Dirt Series season. Congratulations to all drivers for making it a heck of a year.

Wally’s notes:

Our second PA stop of the year found another wonderful racetrack. Thanks for Chris for putting together a great facility and welcoming the WDRA.
The show was run in a speedy fashion, which was welcomed by the long distance travelers.
Thanks again to Bob "Captain Cupcake" for the Hostess treats, including awards to all of the heat race winners.
Another great thanks to the door prize sponsors, Custom Works RC, Brian Clark Motorsports, and Go Fast Race Parts.
Speaking of Custom Works, Phil Cooper’s "test car" was on a rail all day, and he got the results to prove it.
Roger Hill became the only driver to nab 3 Small Block wins in ’06.
A broken left-front suspension left Small Block second place point man Jan Poyneer with an early DNF.
Great to see the PA posse again. I need to get down there more often!
Former WDRA champion Mike Alivero used his home built Nitro EDM to grab TQ honors. Some altercations in the main would force him to settle for a 5th place finish.
The B-Main bump-ups in the Nitro EDM class advanced to second and third in the main.
RAD tire guru Roger Deiter was an early drop out in the Nitro Truck class after TQ ing.
The Nitro TQ curse carried over to the Sprint class, as Steve Tyson was an early retiree.
The Big Block Stock B-Main, just like the A, saw 5 cars on the lead lap as the checkers fell.
Thanks to BBB for the Pumpkin roll!
I really like the enclosed pit area idea. It really cuts down on noise and dust.
Good to see John Snyder of Liberty Valley Speedway taking in the action.
Prizes are still coming in for the points. When everything arrives I’ll divide it up and distribute it in the very near future. That’s all for this year! Look for 2007 info to start leaking out soon.

And contrary to rumors being spread by Mr. Flurer, BBG did not make the filling himself....at least I hope not!
