View Full Version : Making reproduction vintage bodies from old ones...

I think we discussed this once a few years ago, but I can't find the thread.

I have a couple of new and uncut original Premier/Twister dirt oval wedge bodies, and after searching for more of the last 7 years or so, I haven't had much luck acquiring more. I have a feeling that the supply of NOS bodies out there is drying up. While there is little market for a fringe replica body in a fringe R/C division, but I want to make or have made a handful of reproduction bodies for some restoration projects I am working on. I just don't have the heart to paint and cut up a NOS vintage body that I probably won't find ever again.

So does anyone pull their own bodies, or have the capability of pulling 1/10th scale wedge bodies? First and foremost, I'd like to backfill this body and create a usable vacuum mold to work with sometime down the road. I'd feel better about painting these up if I knew I could make more when I needed/wanted them. Does anyone have any suggestions on the proper materials to use for lexan mold pulling? I have asked a couple of body makers about a small run of replicas, and they both told me they wouldn't pull someone else's designs, even if the company went out of business 15 years ago. :(

Any suggestions?

And as long as I'm at it, if anyone has any or knows of where I may find any old school Twister/Premier bodies that are not yet painted or cut up, I'm always interested.

Moody Automotive can supply all the coupe bodies you want and make them in ABS or Lexan and even the very first TROYER MUD BUSS in 1/10 scale. It was a 2 piect body with interior and driver figure. It would be great to see these old bodies running again at local tracks or the national events. Roy Moody also makes many 1/12 style dirt edm bodies dating back to the early 80s. We use to race the 1/12 edms on dirt before the supension cars came into this country. Just think, how great it was in the early days of rc racing.

If Parma still has the molds they will pop out some for you.But you have to buy I think at least 25 of them.

If that's the case, we should do a groupbuy. I see groupbuys all the time on one of my favorite sites, www.fordtruckworld.com (http://www.fordtruckworld.com) ...if ya don't know what I'm talking about, designate one person such as Doug to round up the money...then we place a order. fordtruckworld does it all the time to get parts at a cheaper price. So if Parma can pop out some bodies and you need numbers, let me know...I'll pick up one or two. This is my favorite body style anyways....

I just emailed Parma...don't know if anyone else did this. I'll let y'all know if I hear anything....

These cars on the wall are 1/12 size and are the Moody designed wire chassis with 4 cells and are still the best chassis ever made that worked not only carpet but worked very well on the dirt tracks back in the early 80's. If you crashed and bent the chassis all you had to do was loosen 6 set screws and slide the old chassis out and slide in the new. To bad we dont run 1/12 on dirt tracks anymore. I think I still have the orginal full size drawnings of the 1/12 wire chassis. All these cars used a solid axle rear end.

fellas, this is a great thread with alot of kool pics.Let me ask,is anyone seriously interested in a few of these old bods here??With vintage RC being quite popular,it only be fitting to have some Vintage bods for 'em.With the partcipation on this thread,I'm sure a bunch of you guys still have that old gold tub/graphite car or Hornet/Frog,Losi,Kyosho buggy, they used to race a long time ago.get a couple bodies ,throw a radio and esc in it and run it.Who'd be willing to anty up,and come to some reasonable decision on what bodies to try and attain?
I know myself,I would be in for 8-12 peices, and could come up with the loot to cover my order.Anyone else??I would think between Doug, and Mr. Antilley we could do something through the board as far as gathering $$,maybe some sort of paypal account set up from DO.com ?? Just an idea.I'm sure Parma, maybe even Gary McAllister would break out some old molds,(if available)and pull a bunch if the numbers were rite. How 'bout it gents!?Maybe a poll is in order for suggestions/choices?? I'm in.Thanks all.

Maybe some feedback from the body people, and Doug, and Dan and see if this could be a GO.

Doug Carter
January 23rd, 2007, 11:45 AM
In talking with Gary at McAllister, he has a few of the old molds in storage, and could produce them in limited quantities at a special price for the DirtOval.com members. depending on the feedback and response, we could assemble a group buy to get you hands on genuine re-released dirt oval bodies.

Still in usable condition are the Wedge Mustang, Luminator and possibly the Wedge 'Vette. The Outlaw T-Bird and X-Terminator are not able to reproduced, unfortunately.

Once more details are available, I will post more information on this really cool opportunity for us.

Doug Carter
January 23rd, 2007, 5:29 PM
Price per body would be $12.99 for any of the original McAllister bodies, plus shipping. Would there be any interest in any of the previously mentioned bodies?

Also, I am trying to see if there is a possibility of getting the Protoform Vortex Wedge and original Protoform sprint car bodies re-made. If I can pull this off, how much interest would there be in either of these items?

Please post your interest, as it will determine the likeliness of getting them produced.

I'd jump all over your idea for redoing some of the old Premier designs stuff, but I can't say as I ever had any love for the protoform dirt bodies myself. To each their own though.

huffrcman
January 23rd, 2007, 6:15 PM
Protform stuff will be hard to get reproduced. When Proline bought it from Dale Epp they got most of the molds.

Doug Carter
January 23rd, 2007, 6:54 PM
I'm with ya on that, Brad. I have some ideas, and now I have a source for getting them done. We'll see what I can do with the bodies I have been collecting. ;) I have a Stealth and a Super Wedge, as well as a Premier Vortex. I have an original Andy's NDRA Super Wedge, as well. I'm trying to get my hands on a Bat Wedge, as well, for historical significance. All of these cars are long-gone, so copyrights shouldn't be an issue. They expired years after these companies dissolved. As soon as I can learn what needs to be done to create new buck molds, I think I may be able to offer repros of these early wedges. :D

I've been talking with Dale at Protoform. He's trying to track down the molds for the early bodies and he's not positive that they are still usable. We'll see what becomes of that, but he was excited at the current interest in dirt oval racing, in general. That could mean good things for everyone. :)

More news as I have it.

Doug Carter

No, Windtunnel bought all of the old Bolink molds from Steve Rule a few years ago. I think Roy Anderson bought the drag bodies from them, too. Those are all OEM Bolinks, in fresh pulls.

:D
