View Full Version : GSX Question 1 of 4 :spins in straight?

So, I bought a used GSX. This is the first time out. Was really loose. Backed a couple of turns out of the RR shock, put a couple of turns in the LR and put a turn in the RF. It entered good, exited fairly good. As I accellerate, about 1/2 to 2/3 down the straight, it spins left? Did it on pavement in front of the house, does it on tacky and going dry slick track (Afternoon, in the sun). I looked at the car a bit more. Had an o-ring in the RR shock, as an external bumper (so the avail travel was different on the rear). Someone suggested maybe it was bottoming out, forcing it around. I took it out, still did it, just not as bad. I only got about 4 or 5 sessions as the track closed and I was tinkering.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm completely new to the sprint thing. My buddy was supposed to help me, had to work.
Then I screwed everything up and swapped what was almost working to what the locals say is the 'ticket'. 8 lb springs on all corners, 50 wt. I got it about to where it was. Not as good though. Turns out the springs on the rear were 8 lbs, the fronts were HPI blues, whatever those are, 1.65 mm, not sure what they are in lbs.
thanks

Make sure the tire is not growing and hitting nerf bar this usually happens around half to three quarters trottle. I took me forever to figure this out on my gsx. That was of course after I change out most of the radio gear. Hope this helps

Funny, now that you mention it, I do recall there is some rub marks on the header. So, basically, the tire grows, gets contact on left side, right side tire spins the car around.
What did you do to fix this? Take the nerf bars off? Can't really take the header off. Might look at the rear spacers on the hub, maybe I can lengthen it.
Thanks so much!! You can only know the frustration I'm going through. These things are squirrly enough as it is.

I may be wrong, but I think I remember guys using strapping tape (the kind that is about a 1/2 inch wide, with the many trands of thread through it.) Wrap that around the tire and try it.....it may only work on knobby tires.

I would definitely remove the left side nerf bar. The right side nerf bar will be OK as it is clear of the tires. Dynotech makes rear wheel spacers that work great for widening the rear track of the car. The spacers should be in stock at Racers Haven in Bakersfield. There are 3 sizes, stick with the two smaller sizes as the largest spacer requires a longer rear axle. If this does not make the tire clear the header, then find a different header to use. I am currently using a Losi XXX-NT Header and haven't had any tire clearance issues using B4 wheels.

no need to remove the bar......simply drill the cage about 1/2 inch up from the body and reconnect the bar in the higher posistion.....works like a charm and no more spinning out

K Stevens. Is this Kent at R's Haven?
I've got a RD single piece exhaust. Not sure what to do there?
thanks

No, this is Kevin Stevens. I am usually at the track on dirt oval race nights, and have been running (and tinkering with mods) a GSX for about 4 months.

Mugen also makes a header that appears to make a 90 degree turn, straight down, from the exhaust flange (?) on the engine that will allow B4 wheels to work w/o issue. If you look inside the pipe, it has a nice radius. You will have to dremel off the tip of the left side header - the left body panel (lexan) for your pipe to tuck cleanly up next to the body.
We have some of the Losi's crack at the weld where the pipe connects to the plate where the sping(s) attach...???... Never seen the Mugen break.
I also had to remove the left nerf bar for loose dirt tracks. Same problem - left hand dounut, at speed then you hit a slight dip to compress the suspension.
