View Full Version : Which batteries should I get?

I race a Custom Works GBX Intimidator, with a brushless system. I have some Pro Match 3300's run time at 402 and they are the 1.16's. They have been cycled and maintained every week. I have been running these for about 12 race nights. They dump about 3 and 1/2 minutes into the race every time. They show that they are taking a full charge. I burrowed a 3300 fusion pack for the main and it would have made a 5 munite race no problem. So I know there is nothing wrong with the car.

Now for the big question, What do I get to replace them. I have been looking at the Pro Match 3800's. They are the 1.18's and average over 470 sec's. I have also been considering the Fusion 3700's. They are 1.18's and average over 440 secs's of run time.
Does anyone have any other suggestions. I just want some of the best batteries out there and I could use some advice. You can email me at jsrenard@adams.net or just reply
Thanks
Jason
Buy the way congrats to all of the winners in the Nitro Tour in Jacksonville. Shelley is my wife and we appreciate all of the compliments we have received on the way the races were run and how the staff did a great job.
We appreciate all of the racers showing up.
Thanks

Fusion, all the way. Those little radiator battery bars actually work. I'm a Fusion sponsored driver, which really just amounts to a nice little discount and access to their better cells. If you want some HOT ones, lemme know.

There is a very good article in R/C car action this month regarding the batteries available at this time & comparison. I run Pro-Match 3700's & have had very good results. I've spoke with other racers who claim the voltage is down on the 3700's but once again I've had no issues with voltage or runtime on my 3700's.

Jason-You didn't say how low a wind of motors you are using but even with something like a 9 turn your packs should make runtime with no problem. It could be how you are charging and discharging them.My newest packs are 7 months old and most are over a year old,and will all make 5 minutes easily. This is what I do with mine.I use Tekin BC112 chargers charging at 5 amps with the most sensitive cutoff point which is about .04v drop. After raceday I discharge them on a 10 bulb string with a Deans Black Box(about 5.4v cutoff), then put them in a discharge tray overnight to take them down to 0.0 volts.and then let them sit until next raceday. They will recover to about 6.5v and take 3600-3900mah charge after being trayed all the way down.I don't think cycling is needed unless they have been sitting for 3-4 weeks.I used to treat them by the conventional method of pulling them out of the tray when the lights go out and had inconsistant performance out of them both with voltage and runtime.Since going to this routine they do exactly the same thing every time.I have bought used packs that were supposed to be good enough for practice only and made good race packs out of them after a few cycles like this.

I also flex charge my 3300's which is something everyone says you are definatly not supposed to do but I have been doing it for about a year now with no problems at all.

Hope this helps-Kris

think you need to call Jeff at Pro Match and talk to him and tell him your motor set-up etc
I'am sure he will hook you up

What kind of charger do you have? It definitly sounds like you aren't getting a full charge with whatever you're using. I have 5 year old Pro-Match 2400s (274 sec) that make 5 minutes! I don't think a brushless (whatever one you're using) will be that hard on batteries that you will dump at 3-1/2 minutes.

The GP 3300 Fusion battery packs I have get me in the A-main every time...

I ran Promatch (secound best), SMC cells, even other companies that match cells..

NOTHING BEATS FUSION!!!

Max amps batteries are GREAT for the beginner...Low bucks$$
High up front voltage but drops off fast under heavy amp loads.

I have several packs that I use for practice and there good.

If your racing at National or Regional event they don't compare to the HIGHER-end packs...
So you don't save money there...

The RACING formula from the bible is : Money $$ = Speed!!!

If you take your batteries down to under .9v or dead short you will lose runtime. Something might be wrong with your pack. Try discharging them at 20 -30 amps and put a meter on each cell, maybe ones weak. Maybe overgearing it? I believe the best cells out there are the Ib 3800, only time will tell if they last as long as the Gp's. Weight is also an issue, I know the Gp 3700 is heavier than the 3300's.
